At the LAUSD, May and June are the months when we learn the extraordinary stories behind the many hardworking, ambitious, selfless and supremely talented students attending our high schools. The graduates who we salute for their incredible acts of public service, astounding records of academic achievement, or amazing ability to balance adult responsibilities with a rigorous course load. For the Class of 2012, we have a number of worthy examples. There is Ashley O'Shea from Taft High School, who compiled a perfect attendance record for 14 years, from her first day of preschool through the day she put on her cap and gown and received her diploma. Kashawn Campbell, who attended Jefferson High School and volunteers at a food bank, as well with Root Down LA and other groups. He has done all these things while caring for his 73-year-old grandmother, who is battling cancer. Miko Malabute, a 2012 graduate of Verdugo Hills High School, maintained a 4.2 GPA and will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall on a full scholarship. Miko maintained his outstanding academic record during a time when his father has been comatose, the result of having suffered a severe head injury. Ivan Cisneros graduated as the highest-achieving student in the history of Maywood Academy High School, where he exhausted the entire roster of Advanced Placement courses, and passed four AP exams. Ivan is also a national poetry winner, and a National Hispanic Recognition Program scholar. In the fall, he will study at Harvard University. Only the limitations of space prevent me from sharing the many, many stories from across our District. There is no better antidote to the budget blues than reveling in the successes of our remarkable students. Please join me in celebrating the LAUSD's Class of 2012.
