The film society had it’s origins as a group of film enthusiasts who gathered in a weekender in Moggs Creek in October 1957. SPLIT POINT LIGHTHOUSE and COTTAGES 1891. Victoria’s treacherous coastline necessitated a string of lighthouses being set up from the border of South Australia to Queenscliff. Tenders were called on 2/5/1890 for the erection of a lighthouse, and staff quarters at Aireys Inlet. The construction of this landmark was let to R. Anderson and Sons of Richmond. A BRIEF HISTORY OF AIREYS INLET AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA. The first reported European in the area was convict William Buckley, having escaped from the Sorrento prison settlement in 1803. The name Aireys Inlet is believed to have come from either John Moore Airey who was granted a pastoral lease in the area in 1842 or from George, his brother, who was a Crown Lands Commissioner in the district of Geelong.
