See you at sunrise...: October 2014

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

See you at sunrise. It's probably no surprise that after being away from home for 5 months, being back in California has been simply amazing. Although, yes, I'm less likely to stumble into a bird I've never seen before, there is a lot more to enjoying life than that. For example, I have no complaints about the temps sitting comfortably in the 70s and even low 80s. This is October? I haven't been out butterflying much but I have bumped into a few other species like this ACMON BLUE:. The biggest surprise a...

See you at sunrise...: May in Misso

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2015/05/may-in-misso.html

See you at sunrise. I'm still in Missouri but there should be a big, fat asterisk with a footnote saying I'm only going to be the Lower 48 for another 2 days. Then. five months in Alaska. You can see our checklist here. You'll notice some fun warblers like the many WORM-EATING (they were busy counter-singing each other) and a whole slew of KENTUCKY WARBLERS. On our drive south back towards Missouri, we stopped at a few spots in SE Iowa to revisit some former haunts of ours. Click the name for the che...

See you at sunrise...: November 2014

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

See you at sunrise. A Budge that didn't. As November continues to pass us by, I've continued to pass by my local patches once in a while. One such stroll took me to the Laguna Creek Parkway Trail. This local patch of mine is seldom visited; in fact, this was only my 4th visit. It's a neat spot though for being so urban. The highlight on my latest visit was a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Here's a not-so-great documentary photo:. We noted that we hadn't seen any FERRUGINOUS HAWKS yet this fall. Shortly afte...

See you at sunrise...: April 2015

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

See you at sunrise. That has translated to us being around several songsters that we hadn't heard in years. For example, we stepped outside that first day and heard the easily-recognizable song of a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and a PRAIRIE WARBLER that have set up territories nearby. Pretty fun yard breeders, right? They didn't want to play around too much but I did manage some photo documentation of the PRAW:. We've tallied about 85 species in the past couple of days here in Missouri but that's without much ex...

See you at sunrise...: August 2014

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

See you at sunrise. With August already coming to a close, that means I only have 1.5 months left on the Pribilof Islands. Birding is still going well though and with this season comes an increase in some birds I've been waiting for. I ventured to Antone Slough today to check on things; look how much LESS buffy this bird looks compared to the one last night. But with that bold white eyering, deep rufous cap, and lack of streaking on the middle of the breast, there's still no doubt about the ID:. The fall...

Reno County Birdmen: Viceroy Hibernacula: Something about butterflies for a change

http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/02/viceroy-hibernacula-something-about.html

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Friday, February 27, 2015. Viceroy Hibernacula: Something about butterflies for a change. Ever wondered what butterflies do during the winter? A few migrate each year (like the Monarch), but most overwinter in our area, either as adults or larvae. The Viceroy, Limenitis archippus,. I raised several Viceroys last summer and knew where I might find these dormant caterpillars. This may just look like a dead leaf, but it has a little caterpillar inside!

Reno County Birdmen: Piratics on the High Plains

http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/05/piratics-on-high-plains.html

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Piratics on the High Plains. News broke on Friday that a Piratic Flycatcher (an ultra rare vagrant from Central America) had been found at Scott State Park in western Kansas. We wished we could chase it on Saturday, but had already had our "big day" at Quivira planned for several months. We decided to check after church on Sunday, and if it was still being seen, entertain chasing this first state record. I love the pirate them...

Reno County Birdmen: Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira on June 1

http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/06/cheyenne-bottoms-and-qvivira-on-june-1.html

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Thursday, June 4, 2015. Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira on June 1. Things began to pick up some when we revisited the road (NE 170th St.) we had passed over quickly on our way to the rail field. A variety of shorebirds, forced onto the road because of the high water, gave us great looks. The highlights were eight Sanderling, three of which were in alternate plumage, and a Ruddy Turnstone. Alternate plumage Sanderling: photo by Andrew. We finished our run...

Reno County Birdmen: Strays from the South: Sisters and Sickle-wings, Oh My!

http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/07/strays-from-south-sisters-and-sickle.html

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Monday, July 20, 2015. Strays from the South: Sisters and Sickle-wings, Oh My! Butterflies are on the move! I didn't know what species, but no sisters are expected here. Luckily it was very tame and allowed us to get some great photos, confirming it as an Arizona Sister, apparently only the sixth record for Kansas! Per Butterflies and Moths of North America Online. Arizona and California Sisters. A couple of weeks ago, Anthony photographed a butterfly...

Reno County Birdmen: August 2015

http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Monday, August 24, 2015. While we were watching it we found a nice flock that also had Black-throated Green Warbler, a year bird. I also had a nice Phaon Crescent that posed for me. This was only the second Philadelphia Vireo I have seen in Reno. Hopefully this good birding continues! Friday, August 21, 2015. Cheyenne Bottoms on Thursday. Ring-billed Gull: photo by Bryant. Neotropic Cormorant: photo by Andrew. We continued back around the lake, stoppi...

This Machine Watches Birds.: July 2015

http://www.thismachinewatchesbirds.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 30, 2015. Fuck That Alligator (A Trip Home To Corpitos). Fuck that alligator." How do you feel about that sentence? It's powerful, obviously. It's to the point. Nobody should be confused as to the information that you are trying to convey. Personally, I don't have anything against alligators; I don't think many readers of this blog would. Still, I like how confident it sounds. I can get on board with that sentence. Unless.it were my last sentence. Like, ever. Thursday, July 23, 2015. This ...

This Machine Watches Birds.: November 2014

http://www.thismachinewatchesbirds.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2014. So last year, my good friend/perpetual nemesis Flycatcher Jen. And I participated in the first ever Taken For Granted Challenge. Sedge Wren was a bird on my list last year. I did not see it. In fact, this individual right here was my county Sedge Wren, and was seen just this past weekend. Stoked. Cut to this week, and Jen is hankering for a rematch. I don't know why;. Number. Fucking. Seven. That's right, the honorable. Labels: Le Contes Sparrow. Tuesday, November 18, 2014.

WPBO Waterbird Count Fall 2010: Lake or ocean?

http://wpbowaterbirds.blogspot.com/2010/11/lake-or-ocean.html

Tuesday, November 2, 2010. The past few days have seen a myriad of different conditions from chilly (27 degrees) to warm (45 degrees), calm to windy, and sunny to drizzle. Of course the lake still seems to be re-adjusting after last week's storm with the current shape of the point more like a pear rather than the previous scythe shape and it seems there are also still a few avian gems left out there on that huge expanse of water. Were noted flying north across the lake. Once again Long-tailed Duck. And s...

See you at sunrise...

See you at sunrise. A birding blog by Cory Gregory. I have to enjoy these subtle signs of spring. My schedule has me jumping from place to place and, although some people people probably see these tropical destinations and drool a little, I often look forward to being home to see the signs of the changing seasons. We moved up the road a bit to Isla Salamanca, a well-known birding locale with lots to offer. Each of the last two years I've been there, we've turned up a PIED PUFFBIRD:. The scrub around Cama...
