A Sense of Place

A Sense of Place. Tuesday, October 17, 2017. Many succulents have bloomed for me this year, perhaps this is not so remarkable in more temperate climates, but here in Montréal these plants have to be wintered over indoors and live a life with considerable human intervention. This I believe might discourage their normal flowering cycle. So for whatever reason, this has been a bumper year for flowers on plants that I grow mainly for their foliage. October 17, 2017. A Sense of Place: November 2013

http://barrysbog.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

A Sense of Place. Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Inspired by Helen Battersby's recent post in Toronto Gardens. I thought I would answer her question "Are their any things you love and hate in your garden". Now I won't hesitate crush them under foot. A cast metal snail found in Bankok slides across one of my alpine troughs. I have a number of chinese copies of japanese Netsuke. Quite a few of these are in the shape of snails. The real thing seen here sliding across the glass in my front door.

A Sense of Place. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Agave desmettiana 'Variegata' and two offspring, crammed into a 2 gallon pot. Links to this post. Saturday, March 7, 2015. Another favourite and very forgiving plant, Euphorbia bupleurifolia has sprung back to life after months of winter dormancy and general neglect. Again I wonder what I've done to deserve this sudden display of foliage and flowers, when I've shown it so little attention over the long winter hiatus. To add to the display, lovely green flowers.

Ive rescued many perennials and shrubs over the years at big box stores. Always a delight to see garden center staff neglect watering plants, too busy on their smartphones I guess. Can you tell Pulsatilla vulgaris is my new favourite plant? Here she can have both acidic or alkaline growing plants almost side by side.

It’s still frosty and occasionally foggy here, so it’s a bit too cool and too early to be mucking about with the troughs yet. What I’m Reading. If you have these easy-to-grow plants in your troughs, you can expect blooms in late March and early April in Zone 3. Contrary to what my bank account and sold listings show, I’m still alive and kicking, and trying to make money at this thrifting game.
