Native Win32 for fun and profit. All the cool kids these days are playing with awesome dynamic languages, or on cool frameworks. I’m stuck with C at work, but every now and then I get to do something cool with it. That’s the Wacom radial menu. Windowing frameworks are thick on the ground, and I’ve been mostly dissatisfied with the abilities of the Win32-wrapping category. However, they make something like this reusable, so what the heck. You can grab WTL at the project home on SourceForge. But it keeps t...

We recently evaluated replacements for our VSS. Workalike source control system at work. We have about 14 years of history in our current database, though, and it seems like a good idea to preserve that. The problem is that all that history takes time to import, and shutting all development down for a week while we get the data into the new system was just not an option. I knew there had to be a way to get this done right, and it turns out git can do exactly what we want. This leaves us with this:. Now w...

All the walking in my city shoes has left me with a huge blister on my right heel, and Becky has slept poorly. We’re both fighting what could become a day-long bad mood, which I know can only be curtailed with one thing: techno dance music courtesy of BBC Radio 1. It works, and our spirits are much higher as we hit the trail. By the...

This is still the remote part of the trail, so the outlines of the milecastles. And turrets are clearly visible. At this point, we noticed that this milecastle is numbered 42. Out of 80. We’re more than halfway done! Today we take elevensies at a picnic area near an old quarry. We stopped at the Roman Army Museum.

Laquo; Hadrian’s Wall: Day Nine. Pihea Trail to Alaka’i Swamp. May 26, 2012 by Ben. Is spectacular. Just driving to the trailhead was pretty amazing, but we weren’t nearly finished. We parked at the end of the road, and geared up. Not half a mile later, we found this. This valley is just inland from the Na Pali Coast. Which makes it inaccessible by most means, including on foot. The best way to see it is on kayak, or from up here. At this point, I feel the need to give props to our new favorite shoes ever.

This blog is about three people, their muddy boots, and a checklist. A while ago, we discovered a book called 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. Contrary to its title, contained within these pages are 207 hikes practically in our neighborhood, trail guides to some of the most beautiful places in this most scenic part of the world. Many of these hikes are off the beaten path, and without the book we would have driven right past them. This blog is the brainchild of Becky, Ben, and Meg.

After sharing our breakfast table with a lovely Dutch couple on their way to Scotland, we set off under a cloudy sky. The tiny bit of sprinkling doesn’t worry us; we’re certain that ours will be the first Hadrian traversal ever. To be completed without bad weather. We stop at the Stag Inn. Showers, breakfast, blow-drying our last bits of wet laundry from the night before, boots and we’re off. We hiked the mile or so to our first museum at Chesters Fort. Where we waited and nursed our sore and swollen feet for 30 minutes until it opened. The terrain is starting to get hillier, a sign of things to come.

From pork to Prince to Project Runway. December 31, 2011. This morning, I woke up and opened up Twitter on my phone to find this tweet. Already open. (It reads: "In a room with a view in Florence for New Years."). Which is weird, and I've no idea how this happened (cosmic weirdness? Since I hadn't even read Twitter since last night, and I certainly hadn't left this tweet open. But there it was, and my immediate thought was- New Years, already! This time next year, I don't want us to have any regrets.".
