Sarah’s Story: Random Ramblings. Journeys by bicycle and other meanderings. Aiming for a map-based system, but meantime it will be a list. No specific route notes for the route we followed in these countries. If you want more information, please comment on this page and I’ll add what I can. Thoughts on “Route Notes”. Sarah’s Story: Random Ramblings. Journeys by bicycle and other meanderings. Starting in Banff (Canada) in August 2010, and finishing (reluctantly) in April 2012 in Punta Arenas (Chilean Patagonia); this (as much as possible) off-road bicycle journey changed us to a degree. To a much greater degree it reinforced and magnified what we’d always known we were. This is a chronological list of posts. With a varying amount of assiduousness I recorded route information. Rawlins to Steamboat Springs. Lagos de Mon...

Sarah’s Story: Random Ramblings. Journeys by bicycle and other meanderings. Down South: ‘work’ and relaxation. Asymp; 1 Comment. The official reason I’m in Albany – The Great Southern Festival (Playmakers) is a an outbranching of the Perth International Arts Festival. I’ve played here before in early iterations, but not since 2010. My seemingly simple task is to play ‘a few tunes’ at an Irish jam session. Although chilly, a good time is had by pretty much all. Our newly acquired ‘self-belaying̵...

1speed: Wicked Fun ...
http://phillymtb.blogspot.com/2014/11/wicked-fun.html
Wednesday, November 26, 2014. The crazy mass start at 6 Hrs of CP. Photo credit: Jennifer Carlson. So this year, when the only thing I had to deal with was a cracked water bottle cage, I had a pretty easy run-up. In fact, I was done with my pre-ride and checked in to my hotel by 4:00 Friday. So maybe I was so restless because I hadn't had any problems to deal with! As I pulled up to my spot, I saw the man himself, Shoogs. The Cowbell King - Randy "Shoogs" Larrison. Alaska to Patagonia by bike. August 16th, 2011. It may have taken five weeks to finally see one, but looking after ourselves in Grizzly Country has been a full-time job, hanging food in trees, cooking food well away from camp, carrying bear spray. It seems apt then that the wheels on our bikes are called Grizzlies . Many Alaskans go out and shoot a moose once a year, using the meat to stock their freezer for the winter ahead. A fellow camper, carrying some of his moose sausages (made by a Polish butc...

Alaska to Patagonia by bike. Pleasantly surprised by Panamá. August 23rd, 2012. Crossing the border I noted that not surprisingly, everything felt much the same as it had just a few minutes before, when we were in Costa Rica. I deliberately try hard not to compare one country with the next or to compare them all back to Mexico – which seems to have become something of a benchmark for this trip – but it’s impossible not to draw comparisons. One significant similarity between Costa Rica and Panamá was the ...

Alaska to Patagonia by bike. Costa Rica: hubs, hounds – and hospitality. August 10th, 2012. A broken Rohloff hub. An angry, biting dog. Daily drenchings as the rainy season switched up a gear. Roads blocked by landslides. A doubling of our daily costs with a return to US prices. To borrow a phrase from our good friend Lee, Costa Rica was, at times, something of a shit show. After an impromptu overnight stay with Vicente in Guayabo, we cut across towards Laguna Arenal via a network of tracks and the villa...

Alaska to Patagonia by bike. May 24th, 2012. To any non-cyclist, I can imagine this sounds incredibly melodramatic. If a hill is too steep to cycle up, then of course you just get a bus. What’s the big problem? No-one of course. Except that we did care – because for the first time in 10 months and 10,000km, we’d had to admit that we couldn’t actually cycle this road. But I had underestimated just how steep this wall of mountains that welcomed us to Guatemala were. Instead we should stick with our approac...

Alaska to Patagonia by bike. A bittersweet love affair. December 1st, 2013. I have a tricky relationship with hills; at times it seems more complicated than the human relationships in my life. James simply says that I hate them, but that’s not entirely accurate. It’s true that I don’t love them quite as much as he does. 8230;and in Argentina, the road starts positively; we set out – happy to finally be making progress – descending to lower climes, and the new boots seem to be holding up well. Argentina i...

Sarah’s Story: Random Ramblings. Journeys by bicycle and other meanderings. Parallel lines – an adventure for everyone. Asymp; 2 Comments. Sarah (particularly) has long had the Larapinta Trail. This actually exists – on a whiteboard in the kitchen – a lifetime of fun! Swimming in the water holes is inviting, and extremely invigorating… (Redbank Gorge). Lots of the camp access was 2-track like this; and absolutely ideal for our fat-bike/trailer combination. There were also plenty of rocks to climb :-).

Bicycle Notes
Thursday, September 22, 2011. This is the America i woke up to this morning, and it's not pretty. The america i live in moves like a staggering redneck - willfully ignorant of justice, heavily armed, and drunk off its own power. and there is nothing more dangerous than a drunken heavily armed redneck. for the hatred that drives him to kill overseas can easily be redirected domestically and the execution of an innocent black man is only one more indication that this is already happening. It isn't until I ...
