BIRDING - Kyoto, Kansai and Japan: December 2016
http://birdingkyoto.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
BIRDING - Kyoto, Kansai and Japan. A personal view of birds and birding in the region. Sites in the region. Finding birds in Kansai. Thursday, 29 December 2016. Saunder's Gulls and Common Starlings. I arrived in Kyushu this morning for what seems to be becoming an annual winter visit, this is three in a row. I set off from Kyoto at about 01:40 and got to Daijugarami at around 11:30 after a nap along the way. How many Common Starlings here? White-cheeked were less common than Common! But there were a few.

BIRDING - Kyoto, Kansai and Japan. A personal view of birds and birding in the region. Sites in the region. Finding birds in Kansai. Sunday, 30 October 2016. Stejneger's Stonechat (and Bearded Tit! Strong north westerly airflow out of Russia with high pressure and clear skies, a huge band of rain cloud coming to meet it western Japan. Surely Hegura had to be worth a pop. I finished work at 8pm last Wednesday, got ready, and left home at about midnight. Separating the recently split Siberian and Stejneger...

BIRDING - Kyoto, Kansai and Japan. A personal view of birds and birding in the region. Sites in the region. Finding birds in Kansai. Tuesday, 10 January 2017. Barn Swallow yes, Japanese Murrelets. no. This tiny silhouette against the rising sun can only realistically have been Japanese Murrelet but being unable to even get a certain identification is a far cry from the aim of getting a decent photograph of a bird in the harbour, so this visit will have to go down as another missed bird. Though I failed w...

BIRDING - Kyoto, Kansai and Japan. A personal view of birds and birding in the region. Sites in the region. Finding birds in Kansai. Friday, 27 November 2015. The first question I had to ask myself was does the juvenile really have a short bill? Long-billed Dowitchers; winter adult left, juvenile right. It looks more like a. When alert its slim build became even more obvious. Though it never showed more than two primary tips beyond the tertials it did so often, a small projection can be seen even on a 'd...

Brown Booby, Taimyr Gull, Daurian Jackdaw and a few other birds in Arasaki. The next stop was Arasaki with a plan to cover the whole area and the luxury of three nights in a hotel while doing it. One of only two adult Daurian Jackdaws I saw at Arasaki and only three on the whole trip compared to 30-40 first winters. First winter Daurian Jackdaw.

Hakodate Birding: North Hokkaido 2015 #1
http://blog.hakodatebirding.com/2015/07/north-hokkaido-2015-1.html
North Hokkaido 2015 #1. We just got back from a week camping in north Hokkaido. The first 2 days were a bit of a non event birdwise, Day 1 was spent driving right up to the north of Hokkaido and day 2 was cold, wet and very windy. It was so bad that we gave up using a tent for the first couple of days and rented a bunglaow instead. Very dark and very windy, tricky for photos. The rain eventually stopped and it started singing. I can't get enough of this species. 14 July 2015 at 12:06:00 GMT 9. Hi Russell...
Hakodate Birding: North Hokkaido 2015 #4
http://blog.hakodatebirding.com/2015/07/north-hokkaido-2015-4.html
North Hokkaido 2015 #4. We left Monbetsu and headed north. My wife wanted a nap so we stopped off at one of the capes on the way. Of course there was another pair of Siberian Rubythroats there. They were busy bringing food back to the nest. The male then started singing on the fence around the edge of the car park. Wood Sandpipers. What were they doing in Hokkaido in early July? AFAIK they don't breed this far south. They couldn't have bred in Siberia already surely? 17 July 2015 at 19:15:00 GMT 9. Canon...

Hakodate Birding: The Birding Year
http://blog.hakodatebirding.com/p/birding-year.html
This is not definitive by any means but I hope it will give you a flavour of the area. All photos are my own and were taken in southwest Hokkaido; in and around Hakodate, in and around Onuma, Yakumo and Oshamanbe. The early part of the year is dominated by the eagles a up at Yakumo, they are most active and approachable at this time due to the river levels dropping and allowing the eagles to get at the salmon carcasses. Other ducks include Common Goldeneye, Great Scaup, Black Scoter, White Winged Scoter ...
Hakodate Birding: North Hokkaido 2015 #5
http://blog.hakodatebirding.com/2015/07/north-hokkaido-2015-5.html
North Hokkaido 2015 #5. A Yellow Wagtail near Wakanai last week. Before the trip I had 3 target species to add to my Japan list. The nasty weather at the start of the week put paid to looking for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker but I still had hopes for the other 2. That dot in the middle is a male Yellow Breasted Bunting in Sarobetsu. This is already a heavy crop, it was a long long way away. Anyway, a lifer and #283 on my J-list. A Lanceolated Warbler, another lifer and #284. 17 July 2015 at 18:43:00 GMT 9.

A pain in the neck. And shoulder. And arm. Mandarin this afternoon near Asabu and an Osprey at Yakumo. A long drive around south Hokkaido today in very humid weather, god I hate this time of year. That's why there has been very little to post about this month except my week of Rubythroats. Not much around, late July is a very quiet time of year birdwise. Eastern Marsh Harrier. Red Breasted Merganser, Chestnut Eared Bunting.that's about it. Hawfinch and Grey Wagatil were in town last week. 28 July 2015 at...
Hakodate Birding: Osprey feeding time
http://blog.hakodatebirding.com/2015/08/osprey-feeding-time.html
An Osprey family this morning. Ospreys are common summer visitors to south Hokkaido and there are many breeding territories along the coasts, rivers and lakes. This family reside atop one of the many small stacks dotted around the area. Still hot, sticky and humid. No waders yet but lots of bugs. At least England are ahead (for now) in the Ashes and Windows 10 hasn't broken my laptop. 4 August 2015 at 00:30:00 GMT 9. Brilliant to see these Birdds being fed. 4 August 2015 at 12:13:00 GMT 9. Birds from a s.

As it shoots across the yard? A black, gray, and white comet. Flashed before me- what a sight! A pinwheel of alternating shades. In stark contrast to each other. Were graced...
