The Teacher's View: May 2014

Literature, Culture and the Life of the Mind. Thursday, May 29, 2014. The thing I most appreciate about celebrated writer, Maya Angelou. She spoke and wrote what was on her mind, never mincing words. In today’s world of empty praise and false positive affirmation, this poet is a fresh ocean breeze in the heat of summer. I love her poetry and I teach it often along with her memoir, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Her work connects back to the Harlem Renaissance. Writers and other African-American artists.

Literature, Culture and the Life of the Mind. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Summer Reading- This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage. 8220;The tricky thing about being a writer,” Ann Patchett writes in her memoir This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage. HarperCollins, 2013), “is that in addition to making art you also have to make a living.”. She had my attention with that first line in the first essay. 8220;The Getaway Car:. Patchett began her life in letters at Seventeen. She also tried waitressing, but the job le...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. The skunks of los feliz. To supplement my meager pittance while I continue the search for a permanent gig, I've been doing some production work as a boom-operator, mostly on student. And no-budget flicks. I spend my days cramped into the one corner of the set that is not on-camera, headphones jammed over my sweaty ears, trying to decide who deserves strangulation most: the neophyte director who doesn't know what he wants (storyboards, anyone? The LA. streetcar system.

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. The skunks of los feliz. I decided to have a cookout for Labor Day this year, mainly to satisfy the perverse curiousity that accompanies that all important party question: will anyone come? Drinkers to those who prefer Jakartan microbrews. Most horrifying of all, you've got to somehow ensure that everyone has a good time. And you're in business in a big way. So this party had to produce the goods without the benefit of binge drinking (and, alas, the bong). But I had an a...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. The skunks of los feliz. I just realized last night that I am not what you might call a faithful blogger. Some people blog every damn thing that happens to them. Not me. What's my malfunction? I omitted the entertainingly banal events (my Mom finding the Playboy hidden in my closet), and replaced them with such moments of brilliant introspection as "My bus smells funny". Para; 12:13 PM. The Night in which All Cows are Black: November 2005

The Night in which All Cows are Black. An attempt at finding myself in the dark. Sunday, November 27, 2005. Le Pas De Deux: dance and the ownership of the body. Again, taken from a piece I worked on for a course. This is in part a critical piece about the question from a few posts ago - how does identifying with a work of art change the work and its meaning? And it relates closely to my quandries about weight and the body and what it can mean.]. You are arms and arms and moving. A leg that is lifted.

The weblog of will campbell. Sun 27 Dec 2015. Posted by Will under seasonal. I’m not sure if Christmas as I used to anticipate/celebrate it is a thing of the past. This is the second year Susan and I collectively shrugged when the topic of a tree came up at the beginning of the month. And when it came time to mount the lights to the house, I was notably bah-humbuggy in doing so and then didn’t add the decorative reindeer and light trees to the yard. Susan gave me no ideas what she might want. So I go...
