Joviko's Tech Rambles. Random mutterings from a Curmudgeon wannabe. Yet Another $20 Computer. I saw a VIA APC 8750 single-board computer. For $20 on eBay. After poking around various reviews, tech blogs, and forums, it sounded like a computer with some promise but a few problems. In real life, the 8750 doesn’t look so good. VIA (confusingly calling themselves APC for this line of computers) took a great idea and completely screwed it up. Overall, the 8750 wasn’t a total waste for the price of a mov...

I’ve recently been working on a few new Activities for the XO. As a result of this, I’ve discovered that there isn’t a complete set of utilities for dealing with Sugar’s internal tracking and record-keeping of Activities. After all that poking, I saw the classes and functions needed to list all of the Activi...

JOVI'S OLPC XO NOTES. Observations on the One Laptop Per Child XO computer. Quick notes on the OLPC XO Terminal Activity. On May 14, 2011. Originally published on joviko-olpc.blogspot.com January 6, 2008. Well, I’ve realized that to really figure out what I did right / wrong to get DOSBox sound working on the XO, I’ll need to reimage the OS and start from scratch, and I’m finding all kinds of things to do to avoid going down that road just yet. The Terminal Activity source code. A couple of handy OLPC XO...

Joviko's Tech Rambles. Random mutterings from a Curmudgeon wannabe. Pogoplug: A useful computer for around $20. I have a thing for cheap, usable computers. If it’s $20 or less and sounds like it might do something useful, I’ll probably buy it. I’ve been very impressed with Pogoplug ARM-based computers. They were originally designed to act as personal cloud servers. But are easily hacked to install Arch Linux. I have two, an E02G. Similar to the pink one pictured) and a V4-A1. 5 or $7 and get another E02.
