Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. Down a small alley off Warmoestraat you will find De Prael’s brewery tap room. Bright and airy, quirkily decorated but clean and modern, they serve all the beers from this celebrated Dutch craft brewery. Willeke is my favourite (a Belgian-style Triple). They do nice bar snacks too. Amsterdam’s finest brewery not only brew superb beers, but they have a convivial tap room next door to a windmill!

The undisputed highlight of the trip was a two day boat journey through Ha Long Bay with Handspan Travel. Back then they had a small wooden trip boat that fitted about a dozen people in small cabins. As previously discussed, there are at least two public transport routes from Azartplein (about 200 yards from the boat) into town:. The #48 bus will take you to Centraal Station in about ten minutes. There is also a #68 bus which stops within yards of the boat, but I’m not sure if that stops anywhere useful on its way to Amsterdam Zuid Station. I see a lot of queries on travel forums asking about what it’s like to rent a houseboat or barge in Amsterdam. I’ve stayed on four of them, and I’m off to try a beautiful-looking peniche in Paris in May. I live on a Dutch barge on the Thames and have a particular fondness for them.
