Paul's Fly Fishing Blog. Raquo; Articles posted by paulmetcalf78. Should I Stay Or Should I Go? March 2, 2014. My heart sank as I walked across the field and found the river still very high and carrying a fair amount of colour. Perhaps the level had risen over night from rain further upstream. After a couple of minutes of hesitation I decided I should try for an hour or so. The Wye – full and coloured. It was a fish! A handsome Wye grayling about to be released. I raised the net and could see a grayling ...

Paul's Fly Fishing Blog. Newer posts →. End of one season, start of another…. April 22, 2013. A beautiful spring morning on the river Wye. After a while I started to get the feeling that although the flies were weighted they just weren’t getting down through the flow enough. I hunted through my waist coat pockets and eventually found a pretty battered looking sinking polyleader. Achieving greater depth with my flies I gradually made my way along a lovely piece of fly water. First of the day. After that t...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Monday, 28 May 2012. Getting Wild In North Wales. This trip had been booked for a few weeks and one I was eager to experience, myself and a couple of mates had planned a weekend fishing some of the lakes in the wilds of North Wales. Erw Fawr cottage.base for the weekend. Steve and Martin assessing the conditions on our arrival at Tal-y-llyn. Conditions on this weekend would have been a holidaymakers dream ...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Wednesday, 22 February 2012. The Molten Mono Method. Whilst watching a recent Davie McPhail tying video I picked up what I thought was a great way to attach a bead to the top of the shank of a hook as in the style of a Polyfitus Nymph. The idea that Davie uses on one of his many outstanding YouTube videos. 2 Whilst holding the tag ends in your fingers get a lighter and proceed to slowly heat the ends.

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Monday, 23 July 2012. Back In The Land Of The Grayling. It's been a while since my last post and the last couple of months must rate as one of the most frustrating periods I can remember. I rely mostly on the weekend to get out fishing and for most of that couple of months the rain seems to have always arrived at exactly the wrong time to flood the rivers for the weekend. Nick's 10' #2 almost bend double w...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary: River Irfon Finally Came Good
http://micksflyfishingdiary.blogspot.com/2012/11/irfon-finally-came-good.html
Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Sunday, 11 November 2012. River Irfon Finally Came Good. Another untimely downpour on Friday brought the river levels back up and out of action for any fishing on Saturday but as often with these Welsh spate rivers they do drop extremely quickly without further rain. 13 November 2012 at 11:32. Some good fish Mick. I had an hour or 2 on Saturday morning - quite the different picture. 29 November 2012 at 17:...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Tuesday, 6 November 2012. Redington Sonic-Pro Zip Front Waders. I had all but covered my old waders inside and out with Aquasure in an attempt to get some extra mileage out of them, but with winter looming and the realisation that maybe they had just come to the end of their life I recently bit the bullet and started looking for some worthy replacements. Having now had them for a few weeks I can report tha...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary: Back On Track
http://micksflyfishingdiary.blogspot.com/2013/02/ok.html
Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Monday, 4 February 2013. OKI know I've been a little quite with blog posts lately but to be honest I've had little to write about. The last month or so has felt like a 'close season' with circumstances making fishing a bit of a rarity with only the odd occasion where I've had a chance to throw a fly into some flowing water. A deep fat grayling which registered 3lb on my 'little samson' scales. Missed the b...

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary: Effort/Reward Ratio...Not Always Obvious

Mick's Fly Fishing Diary. Fly Fishing on the rivers and streams of Mid-Wales and the Welsh Marches. Monday, 8 October 2012. Effort/Reward Ratio. Not Always Obvious. The last few years I've dabbled with casting the odd salmon line out on the off chance that I could be one of the lucky few who manage to connect with one of these magnificent migratory fish that enter the Wye system each year with just one purpose.to ensure the continuation of future generations. With only a couple of weeks left before the se...
