The Bumbling Bushman

Friday, October 7, 2011. I'm not one of those people who goes gaga for crazy roller coaster rides or extreme merry-go-rounds. Heck, the most "extreme" thing I've done in the last 10 years was an ill-advised attempt at recapturing my youth on a pair of water skis - that is until a couple of weeks ago when I went zip-lining through the Appalachian forest canopy. Christmas here. It took the three of us this long to get our acts together and pick a date that worked for everyone. We were zippin' fools - espec...

The Bumbling Bushman: Gear Review: These Slugs Suck

http://bumblingbushman.blogspot.com/2010/12/gear-review-these-slugs-suck.html

Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Gear Review: These Slugs Suck. Here it is; the very first Bumbling Bushman gear review. For non-hunters and hunters who do not use sabot slugs for deer, here's the bottom line of this post, right up front so you can close out and get back to work: Lightfield's. 2-3/4 inch Hybred-EXP ammunition sucks. I and many of the guys I hunt with take full advantage of North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's special permit hunting opportunities. The Lightfield slug did not hold tog...

The Bumbling Bushman: The Acorn of My Eye

http://bumblingbushman.blogspot.com/2010/09/acorn-of-my-eye.html

Tuesday, September 28, 2010. The Acorn of My Eye. The acorn drop here in western North Carolina has astounded me this fall. Oaks of every variety have produced a mast crop the likes of which I have never seen. Before it got too cool at night to leave the windows open, Sue and I had trouble sleeping for the acorns that crash onto the neighbor's tin-roofed shed. Add in the fact that I'd just started reading Euell Gibbons' seminal work on foraging wild foods, " Stalking the Wild Asparagus,. Shelling 3 pound...

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Hunting Marsh Hawgs (Part 2): Spotting and Stalking. Dawn breaking over the Low Country marsh is every bit as beautiful as the sunset and we were more than happy to putter around the lodge at Squirrel Creek Island Hunt Club and enjoy the view before heading out on our second day of hunting. The Brothers Degan, ready for a new adventure. Mark had taken his hog the afternoon prior, so Brian and his bow were up next and that meant spotting and stalking. A tall field of sawgrass sto...

The Bumbling Bushman: February 2011

http://bumblingbushman.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Catch and Release Me From Your Sense Of Morality. If the fisherman loves the fish, why does he catch them in his net? When I was a kid growing up in suburban Boston, I was a fisherman of single-minded addiction. There wasn't a brook, river, pond or lake within bicycling distance that I didn't visit on a regular basis. More often than not, my return trip home was complicated by a balance-busting pendulum of slimy, spiny fish destined for the pan. Spring 2010. I let it go. Of co...

The Bumbling Bushman: The Mid-May Ramble

http://bumblingbushman.blogspot.com/2011/05/mid-may-ramble.html

Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Our intention was camping, but Sue's hectic work schedule and a dicey weather forecast in the days leading up to the weekend led us to amend our plans. While I've spent much of the spring chasing wild turkeys around our property in Cleveland County, Sue hadn't been since the first week of April, so that's where we went on Sunday. Bugs were the first things we noticed. The butterflies along the road fluttered all around us; beautiful, pale blue spring azures, common buckeyes, si...

Life by the Sea...: August 2011

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Saturday, August 20, 2011. This month has been a busy one.(though Owen still finds time to catch up on his reading). We spent the first 8 days of August up in the "UP" (Michigan's Upper Peninsula), visiting the Bacheler grandparents and enjoying the cooler temperatures and the joy of sleeping with our windows open. See our Facebook pages for photos from that trip. Here's one more picture, of the family at Tahquamenon Falls State Park:. We said bon voyage to my parents last Saturday morni...

Life by the Sea...: January 2011

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. On Saturday, big white flakes started falling around 9am. By the late afternoon, we had nearly 7" of snow at our house, and this was the third snow event of the month! Here are some photos of our snowy Saturday, and of our budding bird watcher. Upcoming blog topic: Owen self-feeding and drinking (aka: lots of fun and lots of mess). Nate, Salinda and Owen. Monday, January 10, 2011. What a treat to wake up to big white snowflakes blanketing the yard!

Life by the Sea...: July 2011

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Tuesday, July 26, 2011. I guess we're all trying to beat the heat these days. We've been going for fairly regular swims at our local pool. Owen is getting more and more enthusiastic about being in the water - he loves to sort of plop/fall off the pool edge into waiting arms (especially his Daddy's arms), and we even got him to tolerate some "swimmies" (those arm floats you have to blow up) over the weekend. Another way to stay cool is to just keep clothing to a minimum.

Life by the Sea. Monday, February 21, 2011. This past week, Owen decided he was finally ready to start saying some real words (I think he heard that his Cousin Kate was talking up a storm, and didn't want to be left in the dust! We joined a bunch of friends with their kids at the beach on Saturday - here are some photos of our fun. And a parting video of a little bit of cruising action and a "ma-ma-ma" caught on tape! Life by the Sea...: November 2010

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Monday, November 22, 2010. Toys, books, playthings? No, Owen would rather head straight for extension cords, hammers, outlets, etc. The dangerous stuff. All kidding aside, it is great to watch him cruising around the house - he's quite the proficient crawler after just a week or two of practice. Here's a video to prove it. Aunt Stef sent us a cute house warming gift and a handmade card (which can be purchased on Etsy at http:/ goodstufflestef.etsy.com. Owen read it carefully.

Life by the Sea...: December 2010

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Friday, December 31, 2010. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We headed to Denver for Christmas, to visit Nate's brother Dan and his family (Aunt Molly, Cousin Kate - nearly 8 mo.- and dog Lucia) and Nate's parents, who flew in from the UP. I had visions of hot cocoa with the family at a mountain ski lodge, sightseeing along the Front Range, and maybe even a date night out for Nate and I with all the extra babysitters on hand! Alas, Santa (or the Grinch? Depending on the status of my si...

Life by the Sea...: March 2011

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Thursday, March 31, 2011. Throwing, catching, singing. Lately, one of Owen's favorite activities is to play "catch" with a little help from Mom and Dad. We can get him outright shrieking with delight when we assist him in catching a ball in midair, but haven't yet caught that moment on video. No matter- here's a little video action of him playing catch with his frog toy. Nate, Salinda and Owen. Thursday, March 17, 2011. Happy St Patrick's Day. Life by the Sea...: September 2011

http://salinate.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Life by the Sea. Friday, September 23, 2011. Last night, when another friend stopped by, Nate had Owen practicing all the various sounds he can make (e.g., "Owen, what noise does a cow make? Mooooooooo"). Nate threw in a new impression for Owen to imitate, that of my various grunts and groans, which I can't seem to avoid when attempting to get up from any seated or prone position these days. Clearly, Owen thinks Dad's impressions of Mom are spot-on:. Nate, Salinda and Owen. Sunday, September 11, 2011.

The Bumbling Chef | experiments in cooking

March 11, 2011. On Tuesday of this week, with the boys safely in bed and Chris out for a church thing, I found myself standing in my kitchen at 8:30 pm feeling the urge to bake something. My poor dogs wanted me to come sit down on the couch, and stood around my feet in various poses of reproach, but I couldn’t deny the baking itch. You’ll have to wait, guys, I said. Sorry about this. Two of them wandered off to mope in the living room, and one stayed to watch, just in case I dropped something yummy.

Wednesday, August 24, 2011. 3 weeks ago, my brother told me I should blog while I still had the time, which was very wise advice, and which I of course ignored. Now we've been home an entire week and I still haven't gotten the last post down, and I'm starting to feel a little guilty about that. So here it is, the last leg of our trip:.
