In the mid 60's most of the Butlin's camps had theme bars, the best remembered has to be the Beachcomber with it's tropical storm, boats and Hawaiian bar maids. The last remaining Beachcomber at Minehead has been left unused since closing in 1997, with rumors abound that demolition is in the pipeline to make way for another Shoreline hotel. Butlin's introduced badges to identified campers, to stop unauthorised visitors using the free facilities and also give guest access in and out of the camp. The reason for the colour and design variations was to stop visitors returning later in the season and gaining free entry.

The camp was opened on the 26 May 1962 at a cost of around £2 million and was the largest of the Butlin’s post-war holiday camps. Chosen for its good rail links and flat landscape, although this did present a problem with flooding from the sea, resulting in the spoil from the boating lake, being used to build a sea defence. The refurbishment of the indoor swimming pool as well as new chalets and flatlets. Following the redevelopment work, the camp was renamed Somerwest World.
