Maggies Centre, Dundee. The Frank Gehry and Associates designed cancer respite centre was a complex engineered timber ‘folded plate’ multi-plane roof supported upon columns with exposed internal curved roof beams and over clad externally with foamglas insulation and zinc metal roofing and all surrounding a rendered double curved timber tower. A 12m high x 11m deep adventure into the potential of American Red Oak sponsored by the American Hardwood Export Council for the London Design Festival as a temporary installation in front of the main entrance to The Victoria and Albert Museum in 2011. The 33m long x 14m wide building was instructed by the Forestry Commission to house 5No workshops for the education of woodland crafts and skills and was required to be built from British timber only. Laminated larch portal frames at wide centres were prefabricated off-site along with structurally insulated sheeps wool roof and wall panels with British OSB sheathing that spanned between. The Bishop Edward King Chapel. A 20m long x 12m wide x 9m high elliptical lattice ‘diagrid’ of glulam portal frames with concealed steel jointed connections provide a unique elegant structure towering over the worship area of the chapel. The glulam structure also provides support to an inverted ply-clad timber roof structure that floats above with minimal supporting contact allowing light in through the clerestory windows.
