What is Interesting Writing in Art History?: Chapter 7
http://305737.blogspot.com/2013/06/chapter-52-tim-clark.html
What is Interesting Writing in Art History? TJ Clark, The Sight of Death. Voice, in this book, is several worlds away from what happens in Krauss's book. For me the end of the book's opening gambit that readers might see. Its narrator is a passage on p. 30, in which Clark says, parenthetically, "(Remember Chantelou's room with the Sacraments,. I confess that I came late to this book, because I had been teaching and reading Clark's Farewell to an Idea. The book, considered as a book. By which I mean the b...

new year, new pots | carys davies porcelain
https://carysdavies.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/new-year
New year, new pots. January 23, 2015. I’m back in the workshop after my textile Christmas, starting with making to replace stock sold. I’ve also made a dozen bowls, for a commission. They are to be a present, bowls to be used every day, for soups or puddings: practical, yet still special. The great thing with high-fired porcelain is that they are practical: tough and dishwasher-safe. The cold weather makes working with clay difficult: mostly because it’s hard to predict drying times. The Seagull, as the ...

Words, words, words. April 3, 2015. Working with clay, you have to get used to. You can’t just start making something and carry on until it’s finished. I’m also getting work ready for an exhibition in Stoke Mandeville, at the Obsidian Art Gallery. The gallery is also creating a physical book of images and poems from the exhibition. I’ve been half scared to death this week by news of a new auto-authoring service at Amazon. I read of it in a couple of blogs before realising it is. An April Fool’s joke.

Embarrassment and ‘taste’. May 15, 2015. When I put this black plate out (on the right, you may need to click ‘show images’ in some email programs), ready for Dulwich Festival (open again tomorrow, in case you’re nearby), I suddenly noticed something. A spelling mistake. I wrote ‘te’ instead of ‘the’. The quote is from Edward Thomas. Out in the dark over the snow. The fallow fawns invisible go. With the fallow doe;. And the winds blow. Fast as the stars are slow. I’ve noticed myself talking up the ...

Make:shift and other mashups. November 21, 2014. I’ve been watching the live streaming of the craft council’s. It’s been really great – I think I can see and hear better that I could if I was there, plus when I get overexcited – as I always do – I just tweet too much, instead of disturbing the conference! Win, as the young folk say. Together: sharing tacit knowledge –. Things you know, but can’t tell. There’s be more from the conference tomorrow, streaming from around 10am. The Guardian article: ‘I...

February 6, 2015. I’ve been firing work for Kathrin Bohm. To take to Leipzig, for the International Village Show. She’s curating and showing work in. She brought me these Blackcurrent Sodas. Made from currents gleaned. After the main harvest, by people from the East End who historically helped out on Kent farms – with fruit as well as hops. It’s a fascinating community project. Making all kinds of links. 8216;s paintings: suddenly, here’s my own life in art. Kathrin, at myvillages.org. That she was using...

The division of labour. October 10, 2014. This week I’ve been an electrician, a stone-cutter, a photographer, an illustrator, a gardener, a marketer, a critic, and an entrepreneur. Well, sort of. Mending my kiln was the scariest activity: involving chipping away at the kiln’s bricks; replacing the electrical element and connectors (some while the kiln was at 500C); and troubleshooting without overreacting. My hand reached for the phone to get in an expert many times. This is in The German Ideology. As we...
