Monday, 4 May 2015. One good thing about having a baby that wakes you up early is that you get to hear the beautiful Dawn Chorus at this time of year. In homage to National Dawn Chorus Day last weekend, here is a recording of birds at about 5am on St Martin's. Jonathan and Claudia Smith. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Scilly Organics Blog: June 2014
http://scillyorganics.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 24 June 2014. June news from the farm. May was a good month for growing, with good amounts of both rain and sun. Generally crop growth was good, though it also meant the weeds were tramping away at sometimes even faster rates! On fields where there was a weed problem from last year that has caused some problems. Phacelia, a green manure we use widely, is a fantastic flower for insects. A patch of this is often buzzing with bees all day long! Best view from any lettuce field in the country? Other...

Saturday, 23 May 2015. Potatoes can be a very rewarding crop to grow. It starts off in the dark days of winter when you start "chitting" the 'seed' - i.e. allowing the potatoes you plant to grow little shoots. Ridging up the early crop. At some point in March little shoots will emerge and a sense of relief comes over us growers. "Spring is on the way! We can use horticultural fleece to bring on the crop, often with dramatic increases in growth - both for crop and weeds! Freshly dug early potatoes, today!

Scilly Organics Blog: Spring on the farm
http://scillyorganics.blogspot.com/2015/04/spring-on-farm.html
Sunday, 12 April 2015. Spring on the farm. Early spuds coming on well in the sun. Spring is a wonderful time on St Martin's as every field and hedgerow seems to be filled with flowers. The recent good weather has been a real pleasure after the cold winds and lack of sun. But, dare we say it, we could do with a bit of rain to get everything going again now! This female blackbird is highly intelligent, spotting us going in to the shed and within seconds appearing for the hope of a dropped raisin or crumb!

Thursday, 30 April 2015. Veg stall up and running. It's the time of year to start selling veg by the road on St Martin's again. We've moved it up the hill, near the Parsonage, and it's now closer to the farm. As usual we'll be stocking up every morning and produce is available all day, every day. Jonathan and Claudia Smith. Saturday, 25 April 2015. Birdsong this evening on St Martin's. Jonathan and Claudia Smith. Sunday, 12 April 2015. Spring on the farm. Early spuds coming on well in the sun. Jonathan s...

Friday, 25 April 2014. The month of birdsong. April seems to be the month when the most changes in the natural world. Wild plant growth seems to be supercharged in April, with a riot of colour along the lanes and in the field margins. On the farm there are celandines, bluebells, campion, three cornered leek, oxalis, freesias, brassicas and much more all in flower now. The nettles are nearly three feet high in places! Jonathan and Claudia Smith. Friday, 4 April 2014. Honeybee pollinating brassica flower.

Scilly Organics Blog: January 2014
http://scillyorganics.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 18 January 2014. Mid December to early January has seen storms of a ferocity that hasn't been seen for quite some time. Nationally forecasters have said "the worst in 20 years"; a record that's stood since 1886 was broken when the pressure over Stornoway dropped to 935mb. But most worryingly for us was what happened at Lawrences Beach. The idyllic backdrop to our place of work.not so idyllic one night. The high tide ate back in to the bank that lies between the fields and the beach&...Jonathan ...
