Archive for June, 2014. June 6th, 2014. After Scotland votes No – the next steps. If, as I sincerely hope, Scotland rejects Salmond’s false prospectus for separation, it looks as though Holyrood is going to get a shed load of new powers anyway. David Cameron has endorsed the proposals of the Strathclyde Commission, which include Scottish control over income tax, and Gordon Brown has urged the unionist parties to agree on what extra powers Holyrood should have. Archive for July, 2014. July 2nd, 2014. More voices back federal solution. One obvious objection to creating a federation would be the size of England in comparison to the other component parts of the UK. But this could be resolved by giving autonomy to the English Regions. London already has its own elected mayor and regional assembly and this model could be beefed up. Posted in Simon Says. Archive for January, 2015. January 1st, 2015. Why I have a sense of foreboding. Why does this matter? If, however, I’m right and Cameron wins enough votes to head the next government, then we can expect three to four years of further spending cuts that will be painful. Hopefully this medicine will do the trick and the size of the state will be significantly reduced. But I’m not very hopeful. Posted in Simon Says. More about Simon ». Archive for November, 2014. November 6th, 2014. What Scotland needs is increased local democracy. If we really want to see significant public interest in local democracy, the Scottish Government must act to make sure the democracy is real; that councils have the freedom to make decisions which they believe are right for their constituents. Above all, local authorities should be responsible for raising a much larger proportion of their revenues. Posted in Simon Says. More about Simon ».

Archive for August, 2014. August 19th, 2014. Media enrolled in Hamas propaganda machine. But how often do we hear British reporters explaining that Hamas are firing rockets from schools and residential areas, storing weapons in mosques and ordering their citizens not to seek shelter elsewhere? We are told that most of the Gazan casualties are civilians but how do we know? While I deplore its tactics and its objectives, I can understand why Hamas is seeking to exploit every propaganda opportunity. But...

Simon Says - Foodbanks: Big Society in action
http://www.simon-mountford.co.uk/2014/04/foodbanks-big-society-in-action
April 22nd, 2014. Foodbanks: Big Society in action. One of the problems in assessing the growth in demand for foodbanks is that there was no pre-existing measure of the level of demand for a service that did not previously exist. Actually, while I am saddened by the need of those people who have recourse to foodbanks, I am greatly encouraged by the way these operations are run. They are a wonderful demonstration of how Big Society can work. Posted in Simon Says. Click here to cancel reply.

September 24th, 2014. Some reflections on the referendum campaign. Now that I’ve just about recovered from the stress and frenzy of Scotland’s historic Independence Referendum, there are a number of observations that I want to make, based on my experiences as a foot soldier on the front line:.
