Chicago Chess Blog: 8/17/14 - 8/24/14
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2014_08_17_archive.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Another trap in the Caro-Kann, Two Knights Variation. Bobby Fischer wrote in My 60 Memorable Games. That the purpose of the Two Knights Variation against the Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3) "is to exclude the possibility of" .Bf5. As I've showed previously, Black indeed gets in big trouble. If he proceeds in stereotyped fashion with 3.dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5? I don't have the score, but as our Secretary of State might say it is seared - seared!
Chicago Chess Blog: A spectacular game
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-spectacular-game.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Tuesday, February 24, 2015. This is one of my three favorite games that I have played. The others are K.Thompson-Rhine, 1992. And Rhine-Sprenkle, 1981. I would have had a large advantage. But as "Kinghunt" once observed on chessgames.com, "This is a King's Indian Defence - Black is always objectively lost until suddenly Black wins." Or draws, in this case. Up through 15.c5, the game was all book. My opponent's 15.c6! The light finally dawned: I had to allow perpetual check.
Chicago Chess Blog: A trap in Larsen's Opening
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-trap-in-larsens-opening.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Saturday, January 3, 2015. A trap in Larsen's Opening. The following game illustrates what happens if White tries to grab a pawn in Larsen's Opening with 6.fxe5 fxe5 7.Bxc6? Staying in the middlegame, was even better than allowing White to go into a lost endgame. Note also that 10.Qxh1! As played, was much better the tempting 10.Bg4? And now (a) 11.Qg6 12.Bxh8! Chicago Chess Blog: Nothing new under the sun
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2015/02/nothing-new-under-sun.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Sunday, February 22, 2015. Nothing new under the sun. The same tactical themes are seen again and again. Compare the finishes of these two games. They reached identical positions except for the side on which White castled. In both, 15.Nxc6! Is the killer, with the point that 15.bxc6 is met by 16.Qa6#, while 15.Qxe2 is met by the unusual checkmate 16.Nxa7#. The first game is No. 314 in Chernev's classic The 1000 Best Short Games of Chess. Labels: 1000 Best Short Games of Chess.
Chicago Chess Blog: Rosen holds Robson to draw!
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2010/07/rosen-holds-robson-to-draw.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Sunday, July 11, 2010. Rosen holds Robson to draw! In the first round of the 2010 U.S. Junior Invitational Championship, NM Eric Rosen of Illinois, the lowest-rated player, held the highest-rated player, GM Ray Robson - rated 404 points higher! To a draw. Or maybe that should be "Robson held Rosen to a draw"? More information and games from the tournaments are available on the USCF website. Here is Eric's game:. Labels: 2010 U.S. Junior Invitational. That was my goof, not Bills...

Tony's chess blog: Next Stop - Orlando, FL for the US Open
http://tonyschessblog.blogspot.com/2014/07/next-stop-orlando-fl-for-us-open.html
This is a chess blog to document my quest to reach the Expert level rating. Saturday, July 26, 2014. Next Stop - Orlando, FL for the US Open. The month long tournament that I directed and played in went pretty horribly as a player. I scored only 1 out of 3 (0-1-2), despite the fact that I had winning positions in ALL 3 GAMES. It's going to be a very busy week, so dont expect to see any updates until I get back. Wish me luck! July 26, 2014 at 9:09 PM. Was the tournament just for fun, or uscf rated?
Tony's chess blog: September 2014
http://tonyschessblog.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
This is a chess blog to document my quest to reach the Expert level rating. Sunday, September 14, 2014. Here are some of my US Open games from Florida. I missed rounds 1 and 2 as I couldn't afford to play in the 9 day schedule. I asked for a 0 point bye in round 1 and a half point bye in round 2. I showed up to round 3 to see I was paired with as 1/2. By round 6 they had fixed it. I guess in the end it didn't matter. Round 8 was my fastest game. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Tony's chess blog: Chess Future
http://tonyschessblog.blogspot.com/2014/12/chess-future.html
This is a chess blog to document my quest to reach the Expert level rating. Friday, December 19, 2014. Well, another year comes and goes and still I haven't improved enough to get to 2000. In November I decided to take a different approach to improving. During my last tournament at the Port Huron Chess Club, we played a G/90 quad in which I out rated all of my opponents my many hundreds of points. I played very well against my first two opponents, but during the last round I ran into a problem. You still...

Strong mind, strong kids and strong bond. Although it’s a long drive there. I would guess that Abe had a good time. Great facility, quality competitions, comfortable hotel stay and the traffic in St. Louis was not bad at all. Here is the highlights of Abe in the three games, he wore number 22, and played defense:. Chelsea At The Death. By noted Fernando Torres aficionado, Lou Uhler. The joy that surrounded Chelsea fans last week after Willian’s 89. Was special in many ways. It was special as it came from a player who worked his tail off that night. It was special as it kept Chelsea seven points ahead of second place Manchester City. It was also special, because it was something that had not happened for nearly a year for Chelsea: The very late winner. Chelsea’s campaign in the league has been extraordinary this se...

Notes on chess in Chicago. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. What would you play in the diagrammed position? If you said 10.Nde5! Take full credit. White's position is already resignable after either knight move. White loses two pawns and is forced to move his king. Mega Database 2013 finds 18 games that reached the above position. In 15 of them, Black moved one of the knights to e5. He scored 14.5 points in those 15 games. If you said anything other than 10.N(either)-e5! How long has the shot 10.Ne5! 2008) It is...
