THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling

Saturday, 30 December 2017. Shorter hikes: German pilgrimage trails. And I downright disliked Spanish caminos and their commercialization, not to mention the overcrowded albergues. In winter 2015/16 I hiked on three different pilgrimage trails that were easily accessible from Berlin. In the Middle Ages Wilsnack was a popular pilgrimage destination that fell into oblivion with reformation. Just some 10 years ago German historians re-discovered and waymarked the 120 km. THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling: Dalsland: Conclusion and tips

http://christine-on-big-trip.blogspot.com/2014/10/dalsland-conclusion-and-tips.html

Friday, October 24, 2014. Dalsland: Conclusion and tips. Dalsland gets a weird conclusion from me: I highly recommend and advise against it at the same time. Why is that? Other logistical aspects are good as well: It is easy to get to and away from Dalsland. The main transportation hub is Gothenburg from where you can get to many places in Dalsland by train and/or bus. You can easily plan your trip here. Electrical outlets at a lock. THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling: August 2014

http://christine-on-big-trip.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. German interlude, an accident and further plans. The ferry from Klaipeda arrived in Kiel, Germany at 10 pm were a friend of mine was already waiting for me. The plan was to stay the night at his house, have lunch together the next day and then take the train back to Berlin where I would change from cycling to paddling and leave three days later for Sweden. But things didn't go that way. So, please cross your fingers for me that my knee heals quickly! Eingestellt von German Tourist.

THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling: Gear thoughts

http://christine-on-big-trip.blogspot.com/p/gear-thoughts.html

After thousands of miles hiking, cycling and paddling on three continents in very different climate zones and seasons I realised that my gear requirements are very different than most other hikers'. Most hikers stay within one climate zone and/or season and can customize their gear towards this specific requirement. As a result they can lighten their load tremendously because the range of application is very narrow. So what sort of gear do I use now? I will try to describe the kind of gear. I use and giv...

THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling: What breaks when?

http://christine-on-big-trip.blogspot.com/p/what-breaks-when-and-why.html

Because I have been living outdoors for 7 years almost straight I am in the rare position to be able to report about the longivity of gear out of my own experience. I buy a new piece of equipment and use it until it completely breaks or fails - and after so many years I have a very good idea of what breaks when and why. In my experience a Tarptent can easily withstand 1 - 1,5 years of constant (ab)use before it has to be replaced and this is an excellent life expectancy for an UL piece of equipment.

THE BIG TRIP ... an outdoor life hiking, cycling and paddling: Paddling across Southern Sweden: Conclusion, tips and route alternatives

http://christine-on-big-trip.blogspot.com/2014/10/paddling-across-southern-sweden.html

Saturday, October 25, 2014. Paddling across Southern Sweden: Conclusion, tips and route alternatives. Season: I don't think that the archipelago gets "overrun" anytime so paddling there is enjoyable as long as the weather permits it. Götakanal East and West:. Vänern - more like the sea. Season: As this canal is used by commercial traffic locks are operating year round. I have already written an extensive conclusion. With three portages of a total length of 10 km you can get from Glaskogen into the Glasfj...

Fleche New England 2010. April 11, 2010. By last year’s Fleche in the middle of May, I had ridden 1500 miles. This time round I had 1700 under my belt, and 5 weeks earlier, and including several rather long rides. I was feeling pretty good about my training, especially since the route seemed to be a notch less hilly than last year. Loading up the bikes at Randys house in Moretown.
