Ghosts of Codnor Farmhouse. Derby Museum Event Jan 28th 2012. Codnor is first mentioned in the doomsday book of 1086 and the manor of Codnor at that time was the property of William Peveril of Peveril Castle at Castleton. This was a long time before the stone castle we see today was built. At the time when William Peveril was lord of the lands of Codnor there would have most likely been a Norman wooden motte and bailey fortification on the site. The Magna Charta document. Heanor and District Local History Society. The village of Codnor has been a major crossroads for over a thousand years. Roads meet on the market place from Ripley, Alfreton, Langley Mill and Heanor. The village itself probably dates back to Saxon times, and it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Cotenovre. Following the Norman Conquest, the land around Codnor fell under the jurisdiction of William Peverel. The Zouchs sold Codnor Castle in 1634 to the Archbishop of York, Richard Neile, and, in tu...

There was probably some kind of fortified building on the site of Codnor Castle soon after the Norman invasion, most likely a wooden Motte and Bailey castle held in the honour of William Peveril and possibly built by Warner de Morteyne or Robert de Codenor. What is known is that in 1208 Henry de Grey of Thurrock married Isolda Bardolf and in so doing inherited the estate of Codnor. Fig1 CLICK ON PLAN TO ENLARGE. Click shield to view de Grey family tree.
