Growing Local/Buying Local

The goal of the most recent Community Voice project was to identify opportunities for and barriers to a more robust local/regional food system in the Warren County, NC area. The project, which began in summer 2010, was sponsored by the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, with support from the SPARC (Sustained Participatory Action Research Collaboration) Program at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Working Landscapes (a new Warren-based non-profit organization). Perspectives on Land

POL was conducted in four locations: 1) eastern Catawba County, 2) Stanley Creek in Gaston County, 3) the Uwharrie area of Montgomery and Randolph counties, and 4) western Rowan County. Separate films (see below) and public meetings were held in each location. Project content from all four sites was later incorporated into an exhibit at the Levine Museum of the New South, entitled Rural Voices and Visions. Perspectives on Land films:. Motivating Issues

Little or no effective land use planning to manage growth. Loss of rural character. Lack of productive community problem solving. Across North Carolina and beyond, communities struggle with land use and resource management challenges. As population growth brings new residents to previously rural areas, development brings new goods and services. But, that same growth often diminishes the rural landscape and sense of community.
