Compare the Marsh Tit. Wild birds and words wilder still. Thursday, 7 May 2015. On our thirteenth night drive in Tabin we saw. A colugo at nightfall, wrapping the trunk of a tree in its dermal flap; a Bornean slow loris in a muddle of leaves and the unmistakable eyes of another much further away; a small-toothed palm-civet searching for fruit; and, before dusk, a great-billed heron in a tree, its great bill a silhouette against the day's fading light. Five drives to go. Compare the Marsh Tit.

Compare the Marsh Tit. Wild birds and words wilder still. Tuesday, 5 May 2015. On our sixth night drive in Tabin we saw. Among other things, a Bornean slow loris moving at indecorous speed across the bare branch of a tree, returning from a tuft of leaves at the branch's tip which it had been investigating. Driving back, in the syrupy light of dawn, there were rufous-bellied and changeable hawk-eagles and a bat hawk perched in roadside trees and the forest throbbed with gibbons greeting the day.

Compare the Marsh Tit: The name's Bond

http://comparethemarshtit.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-names-bond.html

Compare the Marsh Tit. Wild birds and words wilder still. Friday, 8 May 2015. Buffy fish-owls (two on our seventeenth drive), despite their most imposing stare, have far too big talons and would always be rumpling my immaculately pressed Bond villain suit (Mao-style collar I fancy). Bearded pigs (nine of these in two families): let's not even go there. With a pig as a pet I'd spend as much on dry-cleaning my suits as on weapons of mass destruction. But there is one animal alone which combines the grace, ...

Birdernaturalist: November 2014

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 24, 2014. Day 4 in SE Peru: From Mid- to Low Elevation. This is the 4. In a series of blogs covering my most recent tour down the Kosñipata Road and the Madre de Dios River in SE Peru from October 25-November 7. I apologize for the delay in posting, as I had to divert my attentions to a party I threw this weekend that became rather a production. With this very distinctive hymenium. That’s because hummingbirds frequently rebuild and reuse on the same nest each year. Is one that I had miss...

Birdernaturalist: A Second Day at Southwest Wings and More Owling

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-second-day-at-southwest-wings-and.html

Friday, May 8, 2015. A Second Day at Southwest Wings and More Owling. We then worked up to Carr Canyon where we added all the sought-after warblers, such as Virginia’s, Red-faced, and Olive (finally). A highlight was a flock of Red Crossbills, which had at least two different types. This one appears to be Type 6, the largest and largest-billed of all the types, which are all probably good species. Tuesday, May 26, 2015. This time, the successfully introduced Chukar. This was on my Oregon in Spring tour yesterday, on the way to Fields, Oregon. Today we drive back to Portland, our last day of the tour. Richard C. Hoyer. Links to this post. Sunday, May 24, 2015. If a California Quail Has a Comma On Its Head. Birdernaturalist: July 2014

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 18, 2014. White-tailed Ptarmigan in Taos County, New Mexico. These photos are from my short weekend visit to northern New Mexico over the Four of July weekend. Last time I visited my friends Cathy and Gabe here, we drove to Roswell in the southeastern part of the state for Lesser Prairie-Chickens. Finally, more than five years later, we reunited for another chicken, this time the White-tailed Ptarmigan. He flushed this White-tailed Ptarmigan from right in the trail, nearly stepping on it.

Birdernaturalist: March 2015

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Costa Rica Blog for March 21-22, 2015. I last left off when we arrived in Monteverde, and now we have just one more day left on the tour. Time has flown. A new one for me. As I scanned it my eyes fell on the shape of this gorgeous Prong-billed Barbet right next to the trunk. Later its partner began excavating a nest on the left side of the stump, not far below the fungus. Our hike took us all the way to the continental divide, unusually visible, but typically windy. Our next de...

Birdernaturalist: Violet-clouded Skipper in the Garden

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2015/05/violet-clouded-skipper-in-garden.html

Sunday, May 3, 2015. Violet-clouded Skipper in the Garden. I was putting out fresh hummingbird food in the yard yesterday morning when I noticed this small skipper on the purple asters. I realized I hadn’t really figured out what these lovely purple asters are in the yard, so I tried keying them out. The species that Kearney and Peebles (1951) led me to was Aster tephrodes. In the 1960 supplement they mention that it’s been moved to the genus Machaeranthera. With the common name Fall Tansyaster. That I h...

Birdernaturalist: Baja Has So Many Birds!

Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Baja Has So Many Birds! Each year is different, and that's why I like leading tours to the same places each year. I never thought I'd see an inflated Magnificent Frigatebird on a wire, like this one at the same place as the above – with a Monk Parakeet sitting next to it a little while later. Richard C. Hoyer. Birdernaturalist: August 2014

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Some Sphinx Moths of Costa Rica. I’ve been too swamped with showing some fabulous birds and critters to tour participants in Costa Rica and Brazil these past five weeks to post to my blog. And the more cool stuff I see, the more I have to blog about, and the farther behind I get. Here’s a very quick sampling of the sphinx moths (family Sphingidae) that I managed to photograph and. Identify on the Costa Rica in July tour. Has that classic look and seems to be very common. Nicel...

Birdernaturalist: October 2014

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 16, 2014. Field Trips on the Western Field Ornithologists Meeting in San Diego. For four days this past week I attended the Western Field Ornithologists’ annual meeting in San Diego, where I helped lead field trips. I also attended the science paper sessions, the sound and visual ID panels, and also the big last evening banquet and talk by Ed Pandolfino on the 44 years of WFO history. Meeting so many new people and seeing old friends was thoroughly enjoyable. This is also where we saw t...

Birdernaturalist: April 2015

http://birdernaturalist.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 23, 2015. A Mallow Scrub-Haistreak in the Yard. This has been an amazing spring for butterflies in SE Arizona, almost certainly a results of having the second warmest winter on record coupled with relatively good rains, all following the warmest winter on record as well as a decent monsoon. But the dominating bug, to this day, is Texan Crescent. I think I saw one or two in the past 15 years, and at this very moment there are at least 8 in the yard, each patrolling its own territory. There...

Compare the Marsh Tit

Compare the Marsh Tit. Wild birds and words wilder still. Thursday, 31 December 2015. On a ridge above the Himalayan hamlet of Ulley a snow leopard walks through deep snow. The asiatic ibex on the next ridge stare in alarm but return to grazing, deciding this danger is remote. Far below in the village, a dzo calf in his yard and sweet tea steaming in his kettle, Nurboo sees the leopard and his wise eyes smile. Palms in the savannah. With them go the dappled jaguars. So my year with cats peters out, rathe...
