The Contented Naturalist: Caterpillars Continued: From Poop to Pupation

http://contentednaturalist.blogspot.com/2011/09/caterpillars-continued-from-poop-to.html

Finding and sharing amazing bits of nature. My Wild Back Yard. Monday, September 12, 2011. Caterpillars Continued: From Poop to Pupation. So to catch you up since my last entry. I did go outside and bring in the original Black Swallowtail caterpillar to raise by hand, the littler one. Good thing I did, too, a few days later we started about a week of straight rain thanks to tropical storm Lee. How do caterpillars survive this much moisture? Boy, do caterpillars poop a lot! My late summer dill patch.

The Contented Naturalist: September 2016

http://contentednaturalist.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Finding and sharing amazing bits of nature. My Wild Back Yard. Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Not the Best Day to Be A Butterfly! I went for a walk at lunchtime recently at Brookside Gardens. This isn't abnormal for me, but I needed it more than usual that day, after two days of back-to-back meetings. I'd fought a headache most of the morning so I hoped that a dose of nature would help me feel better. However, my wildlife encounters were a little more alarming than I quite expected. I next headed down to ou...

This Isn’t As Hard As I Thought It Would Be | Greg and Birds

https://gregandbirds.wordpress.com/2015/08/13/this-isnt-as-hard-as-i-thought-it-would-be

Skip to primary content. This Isn’t As Hard As I Thought It Would Be. August 13, 2015. I biked to Eagle Marsh today with the primary objective of getting some badly needed shorebirds on my motorless list. With receding waters and mild weather I was rewarded greatly. This Lesser Yellowlegs was only the first new bird of the day. Well hello there, small flock of Ring-Billed Gulls. Why are some of you smaller with a rusty wash on your skinny necks? And what’s the deal with those funky bills? I have been kin...

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. I'm an all-around fiber geek and crochet instructor. A 50 year old accounting major and contributing writer to Cure magazine. An exasperated Philly sports fan. February 22, 2016. I was the typical latch-key kid when I was growing up. My parents divorced when I was three, so I spent most of my childhood with a length of blue yarn dangling around my neck that held my key to the front door of our house. Yeah, I know. I used to get very confused, too. And she went on (and...

“It’s Too Darn Hot” | littleredyarn

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. 8220;It’s Too Darn Hot”. July 26, 2015. I am not a fan of summer. All I really want to rock when it’s 95 outside is my air conditioning. And then, right around this time of the summer, I stop doing it. All of it. I pull out the cookbooks and drool over bean soups and stews with red wine and root vegetables. I start to crave apple raisin cake. I want to plan my Sundays around football. I want to be cozy. One thing, though; this recipe says it serves four, but I think y...

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends. July 13, 2015. Because just when you think you’ve had enough and the drama’s all over, it really isn’t. As it turned out, the “arm” of the study I randomized into didn’t have the chemo that causes hearing loss (speak up! But the study protocol says everyone still has to get tested after the chemo is done, so I went off to the audiologist and otolaryngologist a few weeks back for their post-treatment poke and prod.

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. I love a Blueberry. I hug a Blueberry. I love a Blueberry. July 12, 2015. A couple of summers ago the BF and I were living in the southern half of New Jersey (that’s South Jersey in the proper Philadelphia vernacular) and it was one of those summers that started right after Easter and ran through the first few weeks of football season. It was ridiculously, crazy hot for about four months. Why you callin’ a googotz, huh? A couple of weeks later, I found myself with a b...

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. 8220;She Puts The Sun And Rain In With Her Green Beans”. July 19, 2015. I know. It’s late July and it’s steamy and icky. It’s Philadelphia in July and this is how it is. I’m dreaming of fall while the air conditioning is cranked up to high. Part of the farmer’s market haul. Check And peach, nectarine and blueberry cobbler. From yesterday for dessert. With vanilla ice cream, of course. Honey Mustard Green Bean Salad (from “Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special”. Welcome to Aunt Sally's Garden. Relax and observe nature with me around my Milkweed Patch. Be aware of the creatures that dwell near you. Do the little things to make the world a better place. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Snake Killed by Air Conditioner. Side of body and top of head: Rat Snake killed by Air Conditioner. Why had he gone in there? Nick's Nature Pics. A Field Naturalist's Photo Journal. Skip to primary content. Diurnal Moth in Evening Light. August 7, 2015. The Common Clearwing or Hummingbird Moth is very active now, searching the summer bloom for nectar. Monarda and Phlox are garden favorites, but I also see them in natural areas on a wide variety of species, including Knapweed and Joe-Pye-Weed. This entry was posted in Nature Photography. https://littleredyarn.wordpress.com/2015/08/16/on-blueberry-hill

Making stuff, one stitch at at time. 8220;On Blueberry Hill”. August 16, 2015. So about a week ago I started feeling a little tired. And then a little bit more, then really blitzed and finally into a full-blown case of into-your-bones deep exhaustion. I haven’t felt like that since I finished radiation and chemo back in January. On me a few weeks back. I am, however, going to make another pan of blueberry cornbread. When I first got my hands on The New England Cookbook. This isn’t a traditional cornbread...

All about the woman behind the mother. Fit, Fab and 40. Wednesday, 26 February 2014. Life With and Without Bill. Today is the 20th anniversary of the death of the comedian Bill Hicks. One of the most thought-provoking, dark and controversial stand-up performers from the US since the likes of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Richard Pryor. Eaten by woodland elves. Showing a couple of photos of fringe cup flowers, got two comments; each sent me off to look up more information. I discovered some interesting facts, worth passing on. Wrote, "Wow, those look a lot like miterwort ( mitella diphylla. Same thing, do you think? They did look similar. Sarah's plant has the same 5 fringed petals, the same green cups, a similar hairy stem. But hers is a Mitella. Why the different names for almost identical plants? With the diminutive suffix -ella.
