I've come across a buckler, a light shield. shields are W. Orn like armor, but rather than adding to my armor points, they affect my ability to block attacks and projectiles (including traps). my shield's strength is represented by the number in parentheses beside my armor class. shields can't be wielded with two-handed weapons, but my bow and dagger are both single-handed.

Crawl's dungeon has many branches. golden staircases represent the entrances to and exits from sub-dungeons. this one, found in the upper dungeon, leads to the ecumenical temple, a single floor containing an altar to every deity in the game. A description of okawaru's demands and rewards appears. okawaru is a demanding god, but i'm planning on doing a lot of fighting and okawaru's gifts will help. when asked if i want to join the religion, i press SHIFT Y. Not long after, i'm accosted by two monsters at once - a goblin and a giant newt! Fighting them out here in the open would be a bad idea, since it would allow them to both attack me at the same time. Instead, i retreat to this hallway, forcing them to approach one at a time. i slay both the newt and goblin but am left with just a few hp. Hp recover gradually, so if i just rest for a bit - using the . Key and pressing 5. Now will get me nearly all of my hp back, making it safe to continue exploring.

Uh oh - behind the secret door is a worm. worms are slow, but they hit pretty hard at this level, and i'm nearly cornered. i take advantage of my speed to slip diagonally past the worm before it can block my way. I use the worm's bulk to keep a bat still as i slay it. with the bat gone, the worm pursues me again, and i'd prefer not to leave it alive - risking that some monster might pin me against it the same way i pinned the bat. i'm going to attack the worm from a distance with my bow. Instead i use a scroll of identify, revealing that the jeweled gold wand is actually a wand of frost with eighteen charges. a wand of frost shoots powerful bolts of ice. its limited charges mean i shouldn't rely on it (especially since i already have a distance attack), but it'll make a good emergency weapon. Shortly thereafter, i run into an ogre. ogres are strong creatures who wield huge weapons and hit hard. this is another monster i want to kill from a distance. I press the z.
