The Big Business Issue…. Stimulating exchanges about challenges in the world of business. Intersections 2011 – Creative Business Summit. Intersections 2011 was a recent two-day conference at the Eden Project that explored the current trends driving business change and new opportunities for design practice. Over 200 delegates heard 45 experts, mavericks, entrepreneurs and thought leaders speak about key issues that are challenging businesses, public sector, and 3rd sector organisations. The Big Business Issue…. Stimulating exchanges about challenges in the world of business. Change The Game – Think StartUp. Todays business success stories are coming from organisations that have really changed the game. These entrepreneurs are reinventing the world, as Forbes magazine recently reported. So why aren’t big companies and organisations starting to think like a StartUp? Do they even know what it’s like to think like a StartUp? If they did could they be more successful? In my opinion, only tho...

The Big Business Issue…. Stimulating exchanges about challenges in the world of business. Coworking – Independence, Collaboration, Community…. Photo by Luc Legay, Paris, France. In my last post about the recent Intersections 2011. Conference I mentioned some of the emerging global issues in society and business that are creating a new tipping point in our world. In response, our society and our world of work is changing. As our workforce matures and Baby-Boomers. Are replaced by Generation Y. It seems th...

Archive for October 2010. What’s the benefit for children? Child benefit is the sacred cow that has been slaughtered before our eyes. I understand the need to make massive savings. The country is in the mire; we owe 900 billion and that is forecast to soar to 1.1 trillion by next year. According to the UK Debt Bombshell. It is the equivalent of every man, woman and child paying back 15,213. UK pays 120 million debt interest every day to foreign governments. In a one-income family, with the sole earner’s ...

Archive for November 2009. 8216;But I wanted to be Mary’: the politics of the school nativity. Leave a comment ». I wish mum hadnt complained about me not getting the main role. It’s that time of year when parents run around like loons, finding last-minute costumes for the school nativity, Christmas production or festive service. But, for some parents, it isn’t the costume that fills them with dread: it’s looking at the cast list. Picapp align=”right” wrap=”false” link=”term...AdImageId=7846866&imageId=3...

Archive for July 2009. Kew Gardens: a marathon, not a sprint. Leave a comment ». It turned out to be a bigger task than first anticipated. As we walked over Kew Bridge, moving from Brentford to leafy Surrey, we thought: a family day out at Kew Gardens. Lovely. How difficult could it be? But when we barely crawled out six hours later, we realised just how huge this venerable botanical garden was. And there were still some areas we hadn’t explored. But Kew is different. There are plenty of activities t...

Archive for June 2010. Pet corner: a Gallery post for Tara. Leave a comment ». I’ve rarely contributed to Tara Cain’s Gallery. Because time just seems to fly by. But Creatures (this week’s theme) was easier as I had the photos on my laptop. It;s about Scamper and Squeak. Last year, I capitulated on the pet front. I said no to cats and dogs (OH is allergic to the fur, thankfully). We’d tried several goldfish, but they never last more than three weeks. Then it started again. But guinea pigs. Yes! Here is a...
It’s time for Walsall to show its culinary mettle | Jaynehowarth's Weblog
https://jaynehowarth.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/its-time-for-walsall-to-show-its-culinary-mettle
It’s time for Walsall to show its culinary mettle. It’s fair to say that Walsall is an *ahem* poor relation to neighbouring Birmingham when it comes to fine dining. The town does lack its one and two-star Michelin restaurants, although it does have a fine selection of chip shops and pizza emporia (I know many of the latter in particular). But now is the time to put Walsall on the culinary map, people. Will we find Walsall's Fanny Cradock? The Channel 4 show. Come Dine With Me. Or call 0871 200 3939.

Archive for August 2010. The child prodigies that make me uneasy. Parents are always proud of their children’s achievements, however small and insignificant. From the first proper smile about seven weeks’ through the ten metre swimming certificate and beyond, we are programmed to burst with pride at every opportunity. Every child is talented at something, of course, and it is always something to celebrate. Width=”234″ height=”320″ /]. Take, for instance, six-year-old Esther Okade. Is it pushy parenting?

Archive for September 2010. September is my New Year. For years I have maintained that September 1 is the REAL New Year, the time when resolutions should be made. How many of us make solemn pledges to ourselves as the final bars of Olde Lange Syne fade into the ether, only to abandon them by mid January? Width=”234″ height=”290″ /]. So, September 1 it is for me. So it is with me. I love the idea of teaching, but not being a teacher (this makes sense in my head). I feel utter frustration when I read s...

Archive for March 2010. These people are me. Here is my contribution to Tara’s Sticky Fingers Gallery: Me. Why are these people me? They are my mum and dad – so I am 50 per cent one and 50- per cent the other (actually, it fluctuates depending on my mood. Today, I’m 60 per cent mum). They have made me who I am today and have given me the confidence to be who I want to be. I am them. They are me. March 24, 2010 at 10:57 am. Posted in Jayne's posts. Archive for July 2010. It’s the end of an era. It’s not every week I find myself feeling a bit wobbly when doing the ironing. I mean, I hate ironing and could cry each time I see the pile of clothing that needs doing. But this week was different. This week I ironed my daughter’s primary school uniform for the last time. And, look, I even took a photograph of it (except one shirt, skirt and cardigan, which she was already wearing by the time I got round to doing this). I’m dreading the leavers’ service on...
