Wednesday, 14 September 2011. Lancs: Grey Phalarope's, Gannet - 14th Sept 2011. A single Common Tern, 2 Dunlin and 1 Green Sandpiper were the meagre rewards from three hours on the local patch, Brockholes NR LWT, during the morning. Late morning, and a call from Cllr. John F. Wright saw me heading for the Lancs coast and specifically Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St. Annes where a Grey Phalarope had been present for a couple of days, and which was a "photographers dream" according to Cllr. Wright. Above and bel...

Tuesday, 12 July 2011. Temmincks Stint, Orkney, Scotland - 9th July 2011. Last reported on 27th June to the best of my knowledge, a check of 'The Shunan' on the Orkney mainland mid-evening on 9th July revealed the bird to still be present, giving distant views, loosely associating with six Dunlin. We could not find the bird on two subsequent checks of the site over the following two days. I don't think it has been reported since. Orca's - Orkney, Scotland - 8th July 2011. Monday, 4 July 2011. This bird w...

Wednesday, 25 January 2012. Lancs: 25th Jan 2012. I headed back via Eagland Hill where a flock of c30 Corn Bunting came up from stubble, perching nicely in a roadside Hawthorn. Nothing of note was seen in the Fishmoor Res Gull roost. Above: Black Redstart - KnottEnd. Below: Corn Buntings - Eagland Hill. Monday, 31 January 2011. Local birding: Common Redpolls and Iceland Gull - 31st Jan 2011. Quality local birds began firstly with a call from Dave Bickerton who kindly invited me over to his garden at Petre Crescent, Rishton, where He and Mark Breaks had caught two Common (Mealy) Redpoll during a ringing session in DB's back garden (referred to hereafter as Rishton Bird Obs - RBO). Above: 2x 1stw male Common Redpoll - Rishton Bird Observatory, 31st Jan 2011. Monday, January 31, 2011. Friday, 21 January 20...

Sunday, 15 May 2011. Local birding: Wood Sandpiper, Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT - 15th May 2011. The f4 westerlies with cloud and rain produced some nice birds on the local patch today with the first Turnstone of the spring (2 birds) seen in the morning and a splendid Wood Sandpiper (above) early evening in foul weather which eventually resulted in 'rained-up' optics. Also, a Flava Wagtail was seen very briefly in the evening was thought most likely to be Blue-headed, but not confirmed.
Bill Aspin's Birding Blog 2: Local birding: Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT, Lancs - 16th May 2011.

Monday, 16 May 2011. Local birding: Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT, Lancs - 16th May 2011. 115hrs of effort on the local patch in an f4 westerly and virtually constant heavy drizzle throughout with steadier rainfall thrown in for good measure yielded some good results. The Osprey stopped just short of the entrance and began to fish briefly before heading back upstream, allowing me time to get the record shot. Time of sighting was 07:10-07:19. What a great start to the session. At 09:20, a gargantuan flock...

Monday, 28 February 2011. Local birding, Lancs: Iceland Gull, Med Gulls and FDxPO hybrid - 28th Feb 2011. Nine hours pottering about locally started with an hour at Pleasington Old Hall Wood to see if Hawfinch still exist? No pain, no gain! Mass disturbance by multiple dog walkers saw the Gull flock disperse. Above: 3 Med Gull. Above: Iceland Gull (arrowed! Roe Deer - Above: Brockholes. Below: Pleasington Crematorium. Above and below: I have lazily relied on automatic DSLR settings for far too long and h...

Saturday, 15 August 2015. This morning I went across to the Exminster Marshes again for another look at the juvenile White-Winged Black Tern. And to try and get another shot of it and the bird was still performing well flying up and down the Exeter Canal! There was also news today of a Baird`s Sandpiper. Seen on Blackhole Marsh in Seaton so Andy Bond and myself went over to see if it was still there and we arrived to find a hide full of people looking at it! Friday, 14 August 2015. Hi I started birding i...
