Sundowner Build: Catch up part 3 - galley and head door
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2015/07/catch-up-part-3-galley-and-head-door.html
Saturday, 25 July 2015. Catch up part 3 - galley and head door. Ever since I decided to put in a cassette toilet I was thinking of a door for the space to cover view from the main cabin. I don't know why, but a bi fold one was what I came up with, intending that most of the time it would be hidden. Below is the first section screwed in place:. And the second. There will be a barrel bolt inside to hold the two pieces together to form the door:. I also glued in the galley top from 6mm ply with 9mm ply (lef...

Sundowner Build: June 2014
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 10 June 2014. Front and side decks second layer. With the second layer on the front deck started things progressed relatively quickly. Simply a case of trimming and dry fitting a plank each side, and repeat. I pre-drilled and countersunk the screw holes as usual. When you have cut the plank to size, and marked out the screw holes (there will be lots of them! The second layer fully dry fit:. Then it was the usual mad scramble to mix epoxy, thickly spread it and screw down the planks. I worked...

Sundowner Build: November 2014
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, 28 November 2014. After hiding from it, procrastinating and being down right scared of it the time had come to pour the keel. I had previously purchased some lead, and bought another couple of hundred kilograms of ingot and about 200kg of lead flashing, dive weights for a total of about 934kgs. And this would be the four or fifth keel melted in it. Also bought some antimony to harden it a little bit, should end up about 3% of the total. Mild panic attack on arrival, although the lead was not gush...

Sundowner Build: May 2014
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 27 May 2014. First deck layer done, second started. For no other reason other than I was procrastinating I finished the decks each side of the cabin and glued/screwed them down. Below shows the epoxy spread thickly, you can see the screw holes from the dry fit waiting for the plank to be added:. And the plank in place, 6mm ply in one piece and very quick:. From the side, supports are 40mm x 20mm half lapped into the longer piece and gunwale, the long piece is 40mm x 30mm:. This is the port side ...

Sundowner Build: July 2015
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, 25 July 2015. Catch up part 4 - fuel tank. One of the main things I was waiting on was sorting out my fuel tank and exhaust before I stick down the cockpit. I ended up with a 60l Vetus diesel tank, I was guided by the dimensions of the space I had. Below is the space between fr#7 and fr#8 (waterproof bulkhead for aft third of the hull) from above:. On the back I could not use similar attachment as the ratchet piece was two large. I used two eye bolts which went through the mounting wood pie...

Sundowner Build: Catch up part 2 - head and desk
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2015/07/catch-up-2-head-and-desk.html
Saturday, 25 July 2015. Catch up part 2 - head and desk. Inside I moved onto the area where the head would be located and the small sitting desk. This is between the main and forward cabins. First I covered in the front of the space, there are two ply pieces with the bottom attached permanently and the next removable. You can see the cut out for the cassette toilet into the galley space on the left painted white:. And the desktop down:. Next is the galley and rear door for the head. Starting on an extend...

Sundowner Build: July 2014
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, 31 July 2014. Forward cabin still - lead keel? I have continued slowly with the forward cabin. Next on the agenda was to sand down a few ply joins that were not quite smooth and then epoxy the underside of the front deck (the roof of the forward cabin). Below shows the view looking forward on the starboard side above the overhead storage. A shot showing the forward laminated beam on frame 2 and the forward king plank (in place for a powered chain winch down the track):. This is the first layer,...

Sundowner Build: January 2015
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Friday, 16 January 2015. This is two calendar months, but not two months work. Happy New Year to all (yes, I realise it was a while ago) but the Christmas/New Year break and school holidays has meant that shed progress has been slow. Did manage to email Rik (I've added his new blog to the side) who has just purchased plans for Sundowner #26. Looking forward to watching how his progresses, hopefully he will not overtake me. Nearly done, note ply to catch the bits of flying lead. I wore overalls, mask,...

Sundowner Build: Cockpit progress
http://sundownerbuild.blogspot.com/2015/08/cockpit-progress.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. With the fuel tank sorted the cockpit is progressing well. The prep work I have done is starting to come into play. First thing to do was to make some holes into the engine bay for the exhaust (top right), fuel intake and return (top left) and an inspection port (bottom). The inspection port is to access the keel bolts just inside. Then it was time for a vacuum and clean up ready to run the exhaust hose. Close up of the supports for the loop:. I also cut a hole for a hatch into ...
