Cherokee Teacher Readers: April 2011
http://cherokeeteacherreaders.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi. This book lends itself to great discussion about not only class, and environmental issues, but also ethnicity, identity, and cultural diffusion. Nailer's choices will engage middle school students and create opportunities for thoughtful discussion and reflection. Thoroughly engaging and full of intrigue, this would be a great addition to our7th grade dystopia unit. Friday, April 22, 2011. Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor. Spaceheadz by Jon Sci...

Wednesday, March 30, 2011. Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin. Positives: Teaches empathy towards people with disabilities, especially autism; teaches students that people with disabilities have “normal concerns” (i.e. finding a girlfriend, getting good grades, pleasing their parents); relatable storyline and characters; good message; interesting read. Themes: Family; Autism; writing; friendship; tolerance. A Tale Dark and Grimm. I was also reminded of a book called Grimm's Grimmest which tells ...

Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Get ready to meet a girl whose voice you’ll never, ever forget.". Eleven year old Melody is one of the smartest kids in her 5th grade class, but nobody, not even her teacher or her parents would know it. Cherokee Teacher Readers: August 2011
http://cherokeeteacherreaders.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Kids Against Hunger by Jon Mikkelson. Another one in the "We Are Heroes" series. Again, the author does a great job of touching on important social issues in a short, easy read. They are a bit on the cheesy- after school special-ish side but kids who are reading at this level may appreciate them and be able to relate/find connections etc. The Empty Room by Jon Mikkelson. Bat-Napped by Sharon Jennings. I read this with students last spring and actually enjoyed it as did the stude...

Cherokee Teacher Readers: The Empty Room
http://cherokeeteacherreaders.blogspot.com/2011/08/empty-room.html
Tuesday, August 23, 2011. The Empty Room by Jon Mikkelson. This author does a great job of setting up a thoughtful, well told story that covers important social issues in a short, easy to read format. This book is one of several in the "We Are Heroes" series. Material deals with helping others in needs, being sensitive to others in need and being non-judgmental. A boy works with his family for Habitat for Humanity very reluctantly and ends up having a great time and making a new friend.
