Monday, August 5, 2013. Data as the New Agriculture. Several years ago Hall Davidson. Came to speak to our network annual conference in Chicago. He is of course a dynamic speaker and offers an entertaining keynote, but he provided an analogy that has been swirling around in my mind ever since that time: Data, he posed, is the new agriculture. What did he mean? That was available to plow the land. Would we use a plow like that now? What about the forerunner to the plow? When I asked Hall for some resource...

School Design Notebook: July 2013

http://diyschooldesign.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 30, 2013. I have heard several people say that we often skip the reflection part of teaching and our students rush through without thinking deeply about what they have learned. Today in class we discussed a tool to help with that very issue and it took this form:. The sample was to help us think about how you can involve students in their own reflective practice of summative assessment reports. Or "what number skill was this? Why did I do it that way? What about my process was really good?

School Design Notebook: April 2012

http://diyschooldesign.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 27, 2012. I have long believed that engagement in the classroom K-12 is of the utmost importance. How can we shape young minds and instill a love of learning so that children might enjoy the work they need to do to build a future of learners and collaborators? But after only two days in grad school I am rethinking my long-held belief that teaching does not play a factor in the development of teachers and administrators. I could write about the other course I am taking, the counterexample, b...

School Design Notebook: Star Teachers

http://diyschooldesign.blogspot.com/2013/07/star-teachers.html

Monday, July 29, 2013. Work on Star Teachers is somewhat well-known among educators. In a conference a few weeks ago when referencing the work, two district leaders mentioned that they had participated in a Star Teacher interviewing process. For those who are not familiar, here is a nice little summary. Of what Haberman concludes about teachers who are effective in working with minority children. In class last week, someone posed the following question for us to discuss:. Why don't students learn? Even i...

Thursday, April 14, 2011. A school for my children. Is it so much to ask for a school that. 1) Asks students to solve problems? 2) Values the knowledge students have? 3) Expects my children to outperform themselves? 4) Provides them with an opportunity to express themselves via the arts? 5) Provides instruction in Spanish. 6) Has ongoing professional development for teachers? 7) Values positive school culture? Tuesday, April 12, 2011. So what makes this work so amazing? The status quo is the following:.

School Design Notebook: July 2012

http://diyschooldesign.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 13, 2012. I haven't post much for summer term because I am experiencing cognitive dissonance on an almost daily basis. I have two courses that are equally discombobulating. 1) Data-based decision-making, which I fondly label "stats". 2) Diverse populations which I fondly label "the crazy guy". I don't even know where to start with the crazy guy so I will start with the easy one, the stats class. The Stats professor is amazing. I guess they all are, but in different ways. It is pretty genius.
