Down with Poverty: June 2010
http://downwithpoverty-myvistayear.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
My Year as an Americorps VISTA.Fighting Poverty With Passion. Saturday, June 26, 2010. On Friday afternoon, Mercy College and Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks hosted a Poverty Simulation at Mercy College in Toledo. A Poverty Simulation is an interactive event that helps participants understand what life is like with a shortage of resources and an abundance of stress. I participated in a poverty simulation. I was the bank. Here's me with my money pouch. The General Employer, aka the workplace...
Down with Poverty: Taking the Plunge
http://downwithpoverty-myvistayear.blogspot.com/2009/09/taking-plunge.html
My Year as an Americorps VISTA.Fighting Poverty With Passion. Saturday, September 19, 2009. When I started applying to Americorps programs this spring, I had been rolling the idea around for the past several years. Either way, I ended up being offered a job at a newspaper in South Dakota, which I loved and which allowed me to learn tons while actually using my degree, pay off my car, save up some money and satisfy my restless wanderer streak by moving randomly across the country to start a life on my own.
Down with Poverty: February 2010

My Year as an Americorps VISTA.Fighting Poverty With Passion. Sunday, February 21, 2010. You Just Never Know. You never know what you are going to get at a tax clinic. I've had clients sit down with a single W-2, looking like they'll be super-easy, only to hit a snag with some complicated itemized deduction or pension question. The ones that look the easiest - beware! Others come in with a schload of complicated-looking paperwork, only to breeze through, done and done. Personalities can also be a toss-up.
Down with Poverty: Unison Health and Wellness Fair

My Year as an Americorps VISTA.Fighting Poverty With Passion. Saturday, July 24, 2010. Unison Health and Wellness Fair. Unison Health hosted a Health and Wellness Fair at the Erie Street Market in downtown Toledo today. Amy and I manned the Ohio Benefit Bank table. We had some good conversations with some other agencies, several of whom were excited to learn more about OBB. So hopefully we have some presentations to schedule in our future! Sorry, I couldn't resist.). The last time I went it was early spr...
Down with Poverty: August 2010
http://downwithpoverty-myvistayear.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
My Year as an Americorps VISTA.Fighting Poverty With Passion. Friday, August 20, 2010. Today was my last day as an Americorps VISTA. Bernice, my supervisor at the food bank, brought in a cake and card for a going away party, and fellow VISTA Amy brought Snickers ice cream bars, aww! Then all us VISTA girls went to Tony Packos for a working lunch/good-bye meal. Mmmm Packo's Chili Mac. The end is bittersweet. This year has been amazing. When I quit my job. I came from a career in journalism; this year made...

Down With Pinatas Down With Pinatas »
The morning after my daughter's 4th birthday, a baseball bat to the face woke me up. My daughter, Gwen, broke the bones around my right eye - because her pinata party the day before was so much fun. While recovering, I discovered pinata related violence is common, and goes virtually unreported! I decided I had to do something. Why not just start selling French stuff too? Make a mockery of what the 4th of July stands for? Barely listened to me, even though I very calmly explained to him the dangers of piñ...

Real Women Don't Wear Pink (Jerseys)
Real Women Don't Wear Pink (Jerseys). Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Hello there. I apologize that it's been nearly a month since our last post. I will admit I got a bit wrapped up in the Orioles' surprise playoff run, which distracted me a bit from my extracurricular activities. Now that they are out, I can refocus my efforts on football! Anyway, with the few games I've attended this season, I've seen a fair amount of annoying fan behavior. I figure why not start a football etiquette handbook! Well, it's ...
Down with poets - Home
So I recorded a CD with the help of my good friends; singer-song writer John Hasnip. Who plays beautiful original guitar music to back up some of the pieces and Caleb Orion. Whose engineering talents are responsible for the high quality recordings. I doubt I could express how much fun it was spending the hours and days in the studio with these friends but if you decide to purchase a CD and listen all the way to the end you just might get an idea. Thank you Richard K Williams.

Gluten Free Homebrew!
Saturday, February 26, 2011. I'm going to celebrate hops for a moment. Last November I was at the Ballard Farmer's Market and saw that Rockridge Orchards. Made a hopped cider. I bought a bottle. I was a little worried it'd be too sweet but it wasn't. The hops were faint but they were there. It's really good stuff. Washington is the number one producer of hops and apples in the United States, so when you live here, these two things should be combined.often. So when the brew store. So I did boil the cider ...

Down With Righty!
Thursday, November 10, 2016. Yes, we are all as confused as you are. Many of us have been confused and upset about the outcome of Tuesday's Presidential election. How could Donald Trump be elected when a majority of Americans voted for Hillary Clinton? Of course, the popular vote and electoral vote are frequently out of proportion, but generally this disproportion is not meaningful. So what if we did away with the Electoral College and every state was in play? If your only defense of the Electoral Colleg...
