Beer | EMILY SCHUCH

http://www.emilyschuch.com/works/beer

I’ve made a few batches of homebrew in my time and I created this graphic to illustrate the beer brewing process. Happily, none of the beers I’ve made have ever exploded, though I usually have a hard time waiting for full carbonation to take place before consuming my brew.

Congress | EMILY SCHUCH

Below is a project I completed for a course in Information Design at The School of Visual Arts. Scroll down to read my analysis and see some additional data exploration. Yes, but he is not as wealthy as Maine Representative Chellie Pingree, a Democrat worth over $40 million and the wealthiest representative of that state. Meanwhile in Arkansas, net worth of representatives ranges from the more than $3.5 million of Senator John Boozman, to the $175,000 in debt owned by Representative Rick Crawford. When l...

Death Rates vs Health Spending | EMILY SCHUCH

http://www.emilyschuch.com/works/death-rates-vs-health-spending

Death Rates vs Health Spending. Below is a project I completed for a course called Statistical Foundations of Data Visualization at NYU. Scroll down to read my full analysis. All means referred to are linear modeled means. Does an increase in health spending result in a lower death rate? The mean death rate declined slightly over this period, from about 10 deaths to between 8 and 9 deaths per 1,000 people. Most countries are close to this mean with death rates from about 5 to 12 deaths per 1,000 peop...

High Frequency Trading | EMILY SCHUCH

http://www.emilyschuch.com/works/high-frequency-trading

Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt. By Michael Lewis, I created this graphic illustrating the process of high frequency trading described in the book. I tested my design on various people to see if they found it clear and easy to understand and made adjustments based on their feedback. I found it necessary to define the terminology and give a written explanation for each stage of the process. I envisioned this design as a magazine fold-out.

Predicting Movie Quality – Emily Schuch – Adventures in Data Science

http://emschuch.github.io/Movie-Predictions

Adventures in Data Science. After scraping data on over 4000 films. From IMDB, it was time to start making predictions. I set out to predict the quality of films. I wanted to know what attributes of a film were predictive of quality. Are some film studios better than others? Do studios release their best films during certain times during the year? But first, how to measure quality? Which rated 1.6. This lead me to question, are user ratings biased? Its possible that people are more likely to rate films t...

MTA Turnstile Data – Emily Schuch – Adventures in Data Science

http://emschuch.github.io/MTA-Turnstile

Adventures in Data Science. Working with data can be messy. Very messy. This week at Metis we worked on a project using MTA turnstile data. The bulk of my time was spent processing, cleaning, and reshaping the data to see what sorts of stories it could tell. I also looked at multiple weeks for a single station. For Union Square, the magenta line clearly stands out from the pattern this week includes Memorial Day. I was curious about where people were going during the off-peak hours, so I did some additio...

Adventures in Web Scraping – Emily Schuch – Adventures in Data Science

http://emschuch.github.io/Web-Scraping

Adventures in Data Science. Adventures in Web Scraping. Figuring out how to get the information I wanted from each films webpage took a bit of trial and error with BeautifulSoup. Once I had scraped 50 movies sucessfully, I tried scraping 300, and then ran my script for the entire dataset. Ah, yes. still in need of cleaning and formatting, but this looks like some minty fresh data I can work with! July 15, 2015.

I know, I can’t seem to stay at the same site for my blog. Blogger, MobileMe, Blogger again, and now WordPress. So why WordPress? I like the templates and the flexibility. And it just looks cleaner. Plus, if I decide I want to learn CSS (which I eventually do), I can do whatever I want to my blog. You don’t mind if I give it a try, do you? Maybe I’ll stay for a while. I'll try. :0). August 8, 2015. Hello, all 3 people that have read this blog 🙂. 8216;s an article I wrote for a street newspaper in Minnesota. Check it out if you want. July 27, 2015. No one has ever regretted anything they’ve actually done? Tell that to 7th grade me with orange hair, due to my experiment with Sun-In. I feel like this is the beginning of an LSAT question. A Semester in Spain

A Semester in Spain. I am spending 3 months in Valencia and I hope that this blog is fun and interesting for friends and family to read, and that it helps me deal with all of the new experiences of living in another country- so enjoy! Thursday, July 7, 2011. Things that seemed ordinary at the time. I was thinking about all of the things I miss about Valencia, and it's probably a very long list, but I feel like I need to get them down on paper (or in a blog). Paying 6 euro for a plane ticket to italy.

Emily At Sea & Abroad | Follow me as I travel around the Mediterranean

Emily At Sea and Abroad. Follow me as I travel around the Mediterranean. August 19. Reflection. August 19, 2011. As I reflect over the past two months, I’ve realized that this was an adventure of a lifetime, and an amazing opportunity that I’m so grateful I got to experience. Here’s a little bit of what I’ve learned over the past two months:. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t take anything for granted. I’ve learned that a lot of people don’t like having their pictures taken, especially in Morocco. I’ve...
