此页面上的内容需要较新版本的 Adobe Flash Player。我所敏锐地察觉到空间对地观测技术在地球科学中的广阔应用前景，率先推进全球定位系统 GPS 和合成孔径雷达干涉测量 InSAR 技术在我国地球科学中的应用，目前又开始试验激光雷达探测技术 LiDAR 在活动构造研究中的应用，揭示了中国大陆特别是青藏高原的现今构造变形图像，为大陆动力学研究提供了极其重要的观测资料和约束条件，受到国内外地球科学界的广泛关注和赞赏。目前地质所主要从事地震科学和防震减灾领域中的基础理论研究，研究方向的设置围绕着以下五个科学技术问题一是以揭示强震发生地点和强度为主要目标的地震构造环境研究二是以探索强震孕育过程和机理为主要目标的地震动力学研究三是以发展地震预测新方法为主要目标的对地观测技术综合研究四是以认识火山喷发机理和火山灾害预测为主要目标的活动火山研究五是以地震灾害综合防御和地震应急理论为主要目标的地震成灾机理和地震地质研究。目前，获权授予硕士与博士学位的有1个一级学科地质学和1个二级学科固体地球物理学。
