I'm not sure why I gave up half-way through what was supposed to be a ten-miler a few weeks back. I wasn't cramping or dehydrated. No soreness plagued my feet and knees. But there I was, approaching mile six, when I just quit. This is hardly exercise science, but I figure that if I can't finish a marathon, I have no business trying to haul myself up a mountain.

I ran faster than I expected; hurt more than I'd hoped; and finished with a kind of crazed, manic look on my face. Id rather be backpacking.
