Cambridge Pitch and Mix Talk. Posted on February 25th, 2010 by benkt. I had the pleasure today of being the featured speaker at the Cambridge Pitch&Mix meetup. With a focus on our current activities and the challenges we're working with at the minute. By focusing instead on just the music collection and moving to a PC-based solution with the SongShifter. Application, we managed to both simplify our technology and open up more promising business models. Our new search and discovery tools are undergoing a ...

Posted on August 5th, 2009 by benkt. We're passionate about two things - music and great software. So I spent last weekend enjoying an unusual blend of the two. Along with my wife and two little kids, I went to the Cambridge Folk Festival. For the first time. We only live ten miles from the festival site and so each evening we went home, had a bath and slept in our own beds - which gave the whole thing a slightly surreal feeling! Tests continuously run by a CruiseControl.net. Server. It still amazes ...

Post mortem of a soft-launch. Posted on August 14th, 2009 by benkt. Psonar made a soft launch on Wednesday, letting in the first handful from the hundreds of users who had pre-registered. Over the last few weeks. I thought I'd try and draw out a few lessons from our experience that might help others in a similar situation. Is nothing if not ambitious, "iTunes in the cloud" at the very least, so we've taken our time getting to a minimal viable product. First up - why a soft launch? For example, the error ...

Basically, I'm into software and startups and this blog is hopefully going include at least a bit about both of these topics. Another Cambridge startup tackling some of the big questions in knowledge representation and machine understanding. Finally, I have a couple of side projects that may feature as and when appropriate. I'm Ben Tregenna and this is my blog! I'm a Cambridge-based software startup junkie. Currently working with Psonar. A web-based music management and discovery service, Eview.

A Disaster and a Recovery. Posted on August 20th, 2009 by benkt. Had our first operational disaster on Wednesday night. The EC2 instance. Running the web service that handles the SongShifter client's connections locked up hard around 16:53 UTC. Now, I've never been a sysadmin by trade, so this kind of stuff scares the hell out of me normally, but in the end Amazon Web Services made it seem so easy. And its all over, phew! AmazonWebServices rocks. Keep the databases on EBS and keep your AMIs up to date.

Posted on September 10th, 2009 by benkt. So we're a few weeks into our 'soft launch' period with a dedicate group of users starting to form the Psonar Community. Having promised an update. Which is now long overdue, I should start with an explanation, which is simple,. Its all gone far too smoothly. This is of course a wild over generalisation, we've logged more than 50 issues over at the support forums. With the most popular one being a request for a Mac version of the SongShifter. Who provide energy mo...

Eview: A new (ad)venture. Posted on June 10th, 2010 by benkt. Its been a long time since I last posted here and I feel a short explanation is due! I've managed to get myself involved with a new startup, helping Eview. Develop their energy monitoring system. Eview's ecoview electricity monitoring solution is the only retrofit product available on the market. It allows your organisation to identify and reduce its electricity consumption, saving money whilst reducing environmental impact. A web-based music ...

Cross-thread exceptions on unshown windows forms. Posted on October 28th, 2009 by benkt. This post is a bit more technical than my usual fare, it describes a fix for a pretty poorly documented problem with threading in a WinForms application. Most of the discussion about threading in WinForms centres around the use of InvokeRequired. To detect when it is necessary to marshal a method call back onto the main UI thread from a worker thread. Typically this code will look like:. One the control was created on.
