A “favela” is a squatter settlement or shantytown most often known by its name given by the populous Northeastern plant that grew in the hills of Rio de Janeiro. They exist because of the unequal distribution of wealth in the urban areas. The majority of people who live in these areas are of the working class. Approximately 30% of the people in Rio de Janeiro live in a favela. 2 Where is Rocinha? 4 Is it safe?
