Nathan Explains Science: October 2013
http://nathanexplainsscience.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Science news and commentary from an actual scientist. Friday, October 18, 2013. People Are Ignorant. Big Deal, Right? Weve been on the theme of political ignorance for nearly a month now, and so far weve concluded that people are generally pretty ignorant, but we dont yet understand whether this is such a bad thing. Recall from last time. There were three arguments about whether political ignorance matters. Posted by Nathan Collins. Science, Reporters, Teaching, and More Coffee: Part II. Some Blogs I Read.

Nathan Explains Science: People Are Ignorant. Big Deal...Right?
http://nathanexplainsscience.blogspot.com/2011/06/people-are-ignorant-big-dealright.html
Science news and commentary from an actual scientist. Friday, June 17, 2011. People Are Ignorant. Big Deal.Right? I wrote about the fact that people generally don't know much about politics, though there is variance, and I wrote about why people know what they know. Basically, learning about politics takes effort, so people only know the things that are the easiest to learn about, which isn't much. 1) People don't need to know all the details as long as they know enough to figure out what's best for them.

Nathan Explains Science: Seeing the Forest for the Splotchy Green Blob
http://nathanexplainsscience.blogspot.com/2013/05/seeing-forest-for-splotchy-green-blob.html
Science news and commentary from an actual scientist. Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Seeing the Forest for the Splotchy Green Blob. Lesson for today: statistics is hard. Specifically, it's hard to sort out real patterns from random noise, especially when you don't have a lot of data. Nonetheless, people sure do their darndest. A little bit randomly — I followed a link from Facebook, then another mentioned on a Web site — I found this: Cancer Cluster or Chance? Referring to stories like A Civil Action. Key is "...

Science news and commentary from an actual scientist. Saturday, February 23, 2013. Coffee Science with Four Barrel's Alex Powar. We're talking chemistry. Sort of. "Chlorogenic acid, for instance, esterizes into quinic and caffeic acid. Quinic acid.so that produces a lot of bitterness. That's why you never want to reheat coffee. It catalyzes that reaction.". Full disclosure: I'm a regular, and I'm really enjoying the espresso. As in quinine [the chemical that gives tonic water its flavor]? Exactly —...
