Wednesday, 24 June 2015. 21st to 23rd June. With such poor weather earlier in the spring, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that the birds seem to keep on trickling in. The most significant new arrivals on the 21st were 2 Little Stints. At Bewan Loch (remaining to 22nd), 4 Crossbills. A Lesser Whitethroat and a Spotted Flycatcher. The Subalpine Warbler. Tuesday, 21 July 2015. A Honey Buzzard took us by surprise today, startling the observer as it flew north over Gretchen loch at 4pm, pursued by Arctic Terns. It was tracked up the island to Nether Linnay, before turning south over Torness and being lost to sight. 65279;. Honey Buzzard photos by George Gay. Sunday, 31 May 2015. After a bright start, the first strong south-easterly winds for weeks whipped up and with heavy rain from lunchtime, expectations developed that there would be a few migrants. Friday, 26 June 2015. 24th to 25th June. Without doubt the best two days of the year weather wise as the island was baked in wall to wall sunshine on both dates. A well appreciated adult Black Tern. On the beach at Nouster with a flock of 80 non-breeding Arctic Terns for a few hours on 24th was the highlight and becomes just the thirteenth island record but only the second since 2003. Thursday, 9 July 2015. I have found this year pretty poor for nest recording. Not only have I struggled to find many nests most of the ones I have found have failed at some point. Therefore I was particularly pleased that this Sparrowhawk nest was successful (well almost! The nest was found on 27/05/2015 and contained 5 warm eggs, these were still there on the 09/06/2015. Sunday, 9 August 2015. Hobbies, Thurs 6 August. As we approach the end of a very disappointing season for owls and kestrels, it was good to find two healthy Hobby chicks to ring in the Vale of Belvoir. Interestingly they were in the same nest as last year and the structure seemed to have grown. Mick P climbed expertly as ever and with a bit of an audience.
