GILLAH MONSTER

Thursday, July 24, 2014. I sat on a swing at the far end of Jay’s backyard, breathing in the smells that perfumed from the keg of homemade beer that Jay and Dan had rolled out just in front of the back door, as the two dogs ran playfully through the crowd. Celia slipped from the group and settled in a seat next to me, and we both rocked back-and-forth and sipped at our drinks and smiled. “I’m so glad you came with us,” she said. 8220;So am I.”. 8220;Good set.”. 8220;Yeah,” I replied and wondered wh...

GILLAH MONSTER: October 2011

http://www.gillahmonster.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 13, 2011. My Parents' First Time in Baltimore. My parents came to visit me last week. As soon as I picked them up I could tell that my dad was heavily sedated. “He had to take Valium. We had a hard time getting through security,” my mother explained. 8220;They were extra brutal this time.”. 8220;Yeah, why? That’s when my father awoke from his sedation, “The sensors kept picking up something around my belt so I offered to show them that there was nothing there.”. My parents came to visit...

GILLAH MONSTER: George Washington's House

http://www.gillahmonster.blogspot.com/2011/10/george-washingtons-house.html

Thursday, October 6, 2011. To which my father responded, “Correction, you’ve only caught me twice.”. Because of statute of limitations he is now officially allowed back in Chicago. We can’t go to the Museum of Discovery and Science anymore because he was illegally climbing on one of the exhibits. Actually, now that I think of it, we also can’t go back to the Aquarium in San Francisco for the same reason. My dad likes to climb. Is that a new trend in Europe? I bet it could go on Letterman! And so he did t...

GILLAH MONSTER: I HATE PLANES

http://www.gillahmonster.blogspot.com/2011/06/i-hate-planes.html

Wednesday, June 22, 2011. I graduated from that school at the age of 3). I hate the tiny toilets that feel like they might take you and your excrement with them into their fourth dimensional vortex. I hate that on every plane there is a baby and that baby is irritable. I got on a plane today. 8220;You’re out.” Was the first thing the welcoming stewardess said to me simultaneously putting her arm across the walkway to block my entry. 8220;I’m out? 8220;You’re out. 8211; Brangelina are fighting again!

GILLAH MONSTER: Harry Potter's Wand

http://www.gillahmonster.blogspot.com/2010/11/harry-potters-wand.html

Tuesday, November 9, 2010. My dad only reads fantasy novels. He used to read certain science fiction stories, specifically by Isaac Asimov and Orson Scott Card, but in recent years has expressed more of an inclination towards elves and dragons than robots and aliens. Series by Terry Brooks, he bought a neck pouch, for which I am told the main character uses to store his elf stones. For. He bought five or six versions of the Luke’s light saber. For. Lord of the Rings. He wore this ring around his neck and...

Bearded Maladies: August 2014

http://beardedmaladies.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Back to the Figure. It's interesting to me how the mood of the sculpture changes depending on which direction you look at it. Which viewpoint do you like the most out of the top three? Friday, August 29, 2014. Wednesday, August 27, 2014. The second head's features got a little muddied when I glazed the pieces. Glazing is a whole new world of difficulty to master. Overall, this was a fun assignment, but I couldn't help being a little disappointed with the outcome. We w...

Bearded Maladies: Bustin' Loose

http://beardedmaladies.blogspot.com/2014/09/bustin-loose.html

Monday, September 22, 2014. Going into this class I was probably most excited about learning how to sculpt a bust. As a fan of portraiture I'm quite drawn to busts and always saw it as a natural progression for my own work. As usual we spent an entire 5 hour session working from a live model for this piece, but I spent most of my time working on it at home from digital images taken during the session. Here are a few photos of the bust pre-firing. They all start bald like a baby. View my complete profile.

http://beardedmaladies.blogspot.com/2014/10/bat-gramps.html

Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Wow, it's been quite a while since I posted an actual drawing on this blog. So long, infact, that I bet you thought I had given up on it. Not true! I've been drawing up a storm and here's a picture to prove it. As a companion piece to last years "Darth Paul". I decided to draw my grandfather as none other than the caped crusader himself! Friday, March 7, 2014. Last night was the opening of a group show I participated in called "Found in Translation.". Here's a photo of the piece by artist Leif J. Lee. That was the inspiration for my piece. And here's a look at snippets from each piece that show the threads between each artwork. I'm very excited to be part of this show which can be seen until March 28th at The Lodge Gallery in the lobby of Allied Works Architecture at 1532 SW Morrison and SW 15th in Portland.
