9 What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)? Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) causes high levels of glucose. In the blood. Glucose is a type of sugar that is your body’s main source of energy. The bodies of women with diabetes have a hard time using insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body process glucose (sugar) from foods.
