Two Reed Warblers (#162) were singing close together in a small reedbed on Studland. After some verbal jousting, they came together and became locked in mortal combat. The bird on the left established its superiority, almost drowning the bird on the right. The dominant bird flew off, leaving this one battered - but still alive. Sunday, 26 April 2015. I was on holiday on the Isles of Scilly when Britain's first Eastern Crowned Warbler was found in Co Durham in 2009, and was disinclined to follow the example of one well known twitcher who left the islands immediately to see it. The second record for the country was identified after the event a few years later, having been pulled out a ringer's net in Hertfordshire and released, never to be seen again. Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Monday, 25 August 2014. Sea creatures great and small. This time last year I found my sea legs and did three pelagics out of the Isles of Scilly. A single Great Shearwater swung around the stern of the MV Sapphire before heading out to sea again. A very elegant bird. Far commoner in the waters around our coast is the Manx Shearwater - these two were photographed from the deck of Scillonian III on the way over. This one was mixing it in among the gulls at the back of the boat.
