La Devaltiere: Orchard meadow
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2011/07/orchard-meadow.html
Thursday, 7 July 2011. This is the first year when the orchard meadow is getting close to our aim. Softer grasses leave space for flowering perennials and annuals. The trees planted last autumn are doing well - no doubt thanks to a wet and not too hot summer as well as much mulching. We will even have one plum, one pear and many peaches. The meadow near the barn. The new wood has been thinned in some areas but we are keeping some areas as screens. My new favourite plant. Posted by La Devaltiere. Parcs et...

La Devaltiere: The site
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/p/site.html
This picturesque topography creates a variety of biotopes adapated to the different conditions of light and humidity. The alluvial areas near the river are rich and damp; they get flooded some years. The slopes are north facing but in most areas are gentle enough to receive plenty of sunshine. The plateaux is very dry in summer and has a thin layer of top soil. This area is in part the most challenging as well as the most exciting. Big swathe of nettles have established themselves. The soil is here r...

La Devaltiere: The rules
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/p/rules.html
1- No chemicals are to be used, none! No fertiliser, no pesticides, no herbicides. The more fertiliser the more dynamic plants are, particularly the thugs like nettles. Killing some plant species changes the balance and kills the animals who breed on it, you end up with a dull lawn instead of a species rich meadow. See what happens by itself, understand and find the easiest way of improving it. Aim at doing virtually nothing at all. In case of doubt, don't do anything. 6- Change the conditions:. Les jard...

http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2011/06/my-favourite-native-plant.html
Thursday, 30 June 2011. My favourite native plant. Is the marsh thistle, it is stature and sculptural quality of the foliage is glorious and the flowers attract huge numbers of butterflies. La Devaltiere: Maintenance diary
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/p/maintenance-diary_14.html
Well you can't let nature by itself, you will end up with impenetrable chaos otherwise so you need to keep it in check. Here is our timetable so far. December, January, February:. March, April, May:. Clear meadow areas that haven't been the year before, mow areas where nettles are to be controlled regularly. Create and maintain paths. This is a good time to clear or create ditches as the ground is still damp and soft without being cloyingly wet. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What we are trying to do. Gille...

La Devaltiere: September 2011
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Friday, 16 September 2011. Late flowering late perennials and bays. Various native perennials in bloom last september. They are all rather tall, a minimum of 1.5m. Already many bays colour the landscape, the wild roses, the hawthorn, the deadly nightshade. Posted by La Devaltiere. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). What we are trying to do. Gilles Clement's La Vallee. La Devaltiere: Getting into a routine
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2012/04/spring.html
Wednesday, 18 April 2012. Getting into a routine. The clearing that I weeded last summer twice is stunning ; it is a carpet of wildflowers: primroses, violets, euphorbias. A number of the magnificent marsh thistle have seeded and I cannot wait for their sculptural foliage to rise to 2 metres and bloom with their delicate flowers that attract an abundance of butterflies, especially the large peacocks, red admirals and a large brown butterfly. Success at last in the battle against nettle in the meadow....

La Devaltiere: October 2011
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 18 October 2011. The meadow with the newly made gap in the hedge to the new wood giving a subtle sense of depth whilst still keeping the separation between the two parts of the garden. The poplars are still standing. Same view at sunset. We have found a sycamore. This is the only one we have. The only other maple family is our native field maple. The tree surgeons have also discovered a Japanese Walnut tree in the old wood. The following morning, deers came to say high in the misty dawn. Pepinie...

La Devaltiere: March 2011
http://www.ladevaltiere.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 22 March 2011. I have posted before about the New Wood here. After 5 years of natural generation here is how it looks after de-brambling:. Posted by La Devaltiere. Labels: The new wood. I can't believe a year has passed since the previous post. No doubt the work on the house took its tole. And yet we have done quite a bit since then, planted an orchard, de-brambled the Old Wood further and cut some wood for the range. Peach "De Vigne Blanche". Plum "Mirabelle de Nancy". Apple "Reinette de Caux".
