Wednesday, October 18, 2006. This is an interesting week, while in the microbiology lab, I manage to see a scabies and hookworm parasite under the microscope! The hookworm is a nematode parasite that lives in the small intestine of its host. The 2 species of hookworms commonly infect humans are Ancylostoma duodnale and Necator americanus. It is an intestinal parasite that usually cause diarrhoea or cramps. Scabies is an infestation of the top layer of the skin with a parasite known as Sarcoptes Scrabiei&...

Inoculate control organisms on the other part of the Mueller Hinton plate, e.g; Enterococcus spp (negative), Streptococcus bovis biotype 1 (positive). Posted by Guinea Piggy @ 11:15 AM.

Monday, August 28, 2006. There is 2 types of way to screen for the malaria parasite. The first one, which is the one we use in the lab im attached to, is the immunofluorescence method. It is also known as the QBC Malaria test. EDTA blood are used. 1 Fill the QBC capillary tube with patient's sample to a level between the 2 blue lines. Wipe off any excess on the outside of the tube with tissue. 5Insert a float on to the other end of the tube. 6Centrifuge for 5 minutes. 7Examine under fluorescent microscope.

Saturday, July 29, 2006. Being attached to a private lab, i realised time is a very important factor. I have learnt to adapt to doing things fast and accurately, unlike in school whereby we are able to take our time to ensure what we do are correct. So in a micro lab, what do you do when you receive samples for cultures? For a High Vaginal Swab, you need a blood agar which is a general plate which enhance the growth of most pathogens, a MacConkey plate and SABC, which is for testing of fungus growth.

Sunday, August 27, 2006. During the 2nd and 3rd week in the microbiology, I learnt about culture plating, where specimens are inoculated onto agar plates to look for growth of microorganisms. The specimens that are usually cultured in the lab are ;. 7) high vaginal swabs. 9) external/internal wound swabs. Used in the isolation and differentiation of. Organisms. Being electrolyte deficient, it prevents the swarming of. Species. Lactose fermenters produce yellow. High Vaginal swabs requires to be inoculate...

Monday, July 24, 2006. Haem case study 2. Sample Collection: Whole blood via venipuncture. Samples Processing: Blood sample is collected in an EDTA tube (there must be at least 3mL of blood). Once received, a lab no. is given to the sample for identification purposes. Preliminary laboratory tests: Alkaline Cellulose Acetate Electrophoresis (ACAE),. 1) Blood samples are firstly washed with 0.9% NaCl and centrifuged. This step is done 2 times. The purpose is to get packed cells (pellet). 10) Staining: Ponc...

Sunday, August 27, 2006. Simmon’s citrate agar slant, in-house. 1 Touch the center of a well-isolated colony with a needle or alternatively use a light inoculum from a saline suspension and inoculate the surface of the slant as a single streak. Do not stab the slant since the reaction requires oxygen. 3 Tube cap must be loose.
