Higher Education in a Globalized World: Clippings. Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Australia faces tough contest with US for Asian students. From The Sydney Morning Herald. Australian universities are facing the challenge of competing for Asia's best students against global brands such as Berkeley and UCLA. After two decades of practically unrivalled access, Australian universities need to review their comparative advantage against this new and formidable competition. Is the threat real? China’s universi...

HE Planning Blog: Applying Student Number Controls to Alternative Providers with Designated Courses
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2012/12/applying-student-number-controls-to.html
Friday, 21 December 2012. Applying Student Number Controls to Alternative Providers with Designated Courses. Today is supposed to be the last day in human history. I felt it would be a fitting epitaph to spend a few of my last hours on the earth writing a thousand words on the BIS consultation on alternative providers and the SNC. An exercise in existentialist policy analysis, if you like. Given that that we [ sic. For the public providers, the key paragraph is 2.1.4. Now in one sense none of this tells ...
HE Planning Blog: May 2012
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 30 May 2012. A sign of life. Things have been quiet on this blog recently. Since I changed jobs six months ago I have had less time free for blogging, and my focus at work has been less on the external issues of finance, policy, regulation, new providers and the other stuff I blog about, more on the internal day-to-day management of an institution. Amongst other things I have missed were the anniversary of my first post. My most-viewed posts have been this one about KIS. Got a mention in the FT.
HE Planning Blog: February 2012
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 28 February 2012. In which my lack of enthusiasm for KIS is not universally shared. Sir Tim Wilson's review of business/university collaboration has recommended the adoption of a KIS for postgraduates as ' a priority development. So clearly Sir Tim thinks better of the KIS than I do. It is difficult for me to argue that I know more about HE than he does, so I won't try. So if this one of Sir Tim's recommendations finds favour with BIS, I at least will not be cheering. Links to this post. To get ...
HE Planning Blog: March 2012
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 19 March 2012. A welcome sign that I am not as old as I feel. Is that when Chris Bertram. Writes that '[n] ot long ago, higher education was free', his 'not long' is longer than my entire adult life. I'd also note that the period of charging for higher education has also been a period of massive expansion in HE attendance, especially amongst women and ethnic minorities. So as an example of the way 'enclosures' are threatening our freedoms in the UK the case of HE works poorly. Links to this post.
HE Planning Blog: June 2012
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Friday, 29 June 2012. There are some significant differences between the cultures of US and UK journalism, as becomes pretty clear from even a quick scan of the headlines. Usually I think the British headline writers show more verve and humour, but sometimes the American approach wins out, as in this case where the Telegraph. Story is reported in the Chronicle. Under the truly delicious title Foreign Students Said to Get a Leg Up in Admission to British Universities. Links to this post. Links to this post.
HE Planning Blog: Marks out of Ten
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/marks-out-of-ten.html
Wednesday, 16 January 2013. Marks out of Ten. A good habit I have picked up from Brad DeLong is to go back over one’s work from time to time and identify the things one has gotten wrong. He calls this ‘ marking my beliefs to market. 8217; Reading through the last year’s blog posts I can see a number of pieces about the UCAS recruitment cycle. I’ve already published my self-defence on that one here. And I continue to think that the 2012 recruitment cycle was a lot less than catastrophic. To get a bit more...
HE Planning Blog: January 2013
http://heplanningblog.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 31 January 2013. Yet another post about UCAS data. UCAS have now published their data for applications to the 15 January deadline. By this stage, almost all school-leavers who are going to apply have applied, and a significant proportion of the Overseas and older applicants have also applied. Because the data are taken with reference to an actual deadline this dataset, unlike the earlier UCAS data releases. Links to this post. Wednesday, 16 January 2013. Marks out of Ten.
