Firewater: Winter Birds...
http://fosterfanning.blogspot.com/2014/02/winter-birds_14.html
Friday, February 14, 2014. If you have a home feeding station in a winter-like environment chances are your already familiar with Nuthatches, members of the bird family Sittidae. Apparently the moniker of ‘nuthatch’ is, in part derived from an older English name of “nuthack”. Due to their habit of wedging nuts and other food in tree crevices before hacking them open with its long, sturdy bill. Click on image to see a larger version). Thursday, November 5, 2009. SALISH SEA: First proposed in 1990 as the official name for the grouping of Puget Sound, Strait of Georgia and Strait of Juan de Fuca. Salish refers to the Salishan languages spoken by many of the tribes in the area, collectively referred to as Coast Salish peoples. Board members approved the name to acknowledge the ecological continuum that spans the international boundary between Canada and the United States. See you on the Salish Sea. Links to this post. Sunday, March 15, 2009. Hide and Seek with Oregon Beach Fossils. Recently while posting in the blog FIREWATER IMAGES the series BEACH PHOTOS was the focus. This led me to researching my files and therein I found this group of pictures from a late winter trip to the Oregon Coast. This is an interesting series in that Catherine and I discovered a fossil bed in the beach rock uncovered by the recent storm surge of those mighty Pacific waves. In front of the cave stood these 'mushroom' rocks. Part of the...

Firewater: July 2009

Thursday, July 23, 2009. Hwy 21 Truck rollover. Here are some images from the accident:. Above: Made for something of an ironic photo; the PASS WITH CARE highway sign caught up in the rear axle of the over-turned trailer. Fortunately road construction was underway and there was limited traffic on the highway. No other vehicle was involved in the accident. To keep traffic moving D.O.T. pilot vehicle leads traffic on old railroad grade bypassing the accident scene. Links to this post. FIREWATER Images now ...

Firewater: June 2009
http://fosterfanning.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Arriving on scene I did a safety size-up. Besides the obvious - truck on fire, I noted the following:. Fire in the vehicle was at least an hour old given the amount of the truck burned. Power lines above the truck were probably still hot and possibly compromised due exposure to the heat. Possibility of tensile failure and charged lines falling. Not enough moisture in the smoke coming from the truck to pose a real problem of arching from the lines. Using the heavy equipment on scen...

Firewater: September 2013 Road-Trip...
http://fosterfanning.blogspot.com/2013/11/september-2013-road-trip.html
Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Our departure was September 5. The day after my birthday and the day before Catherine’s. Usually we are on a month long sail cruise at this time of year but my injury took the option of the boat off the table – too much potential for less-than-light-duty activity. The Washington State Highway 20 bridge over Early Winter's Creek. The Hwy separates the campground into north and south areas. We camped to the north and had that area to ourselves. We knew there was a red flag storm...

Tuesday, January 6, 2009. Celebrating 50 years with Alaska. Lets take a short look at a little northern history here: It was on January 3, 1959, that President Eisenhower signed the declaration officially making Alaska the 49th state. With the addition of Alaska into the nation the new American flag featured seven rows of seven stars each. Indeed Secretary Seward's words have proved themselves true time and time again.
