THE FIRST 100 YEARS. Of the area is made by Lieutenant Grant on 8 December 1800 on his voyage through Bass Strait in the Lady Nelson. On the shores of the bay are attributed to sealers and whalers operating in Bass Strait in the 1800s. Gellibrand and Hesse are the first white men. To penetrate the Otway Ranges. On the Great Ocean Road. The earliest known white settlement in the area was by the Henty Brothers who established a whaling station at Point Bunbury. The earliest names for the settlement were Middleton and later Krambruk -. With the town eventually taking on the name of the given to the bay by Captain Loutit who used it for shelter for his coastal trading vessel. Apollo Bay is a popular tourist spot all year round. Its wide sandy beaches, safe harbour and local attractions make it ideal for holidays.
