Korean Heather: November 2007
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 16, 2007. Direct Advertising in Korea. But then again, so does everyone else in my apartment building. Once in a while, my apartment manager comes by and rips them all down, sweeps them out of the hallways, etc. In the beginning, I would dutifully clean my door each day, or sometimes twice a day. Some weeks back, I stopped bothering. Frankly, I think the autumn colors of my welcome sign blend nicely with the primary hues of pizza and chicken fliers. Tuesday, November 13, 2007. Whose week...

Korean Heather: P.S. (Hair epilogue)
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008/11/ps.html
Saturday, November 1, 2008. Since I've already said so much about my hair here, I may as well add the hair-epilogue as well. One day last week at around 9 pm I made my decision to come home. The next day, I went and got my bangs cut in a leaf-shape. I have no picture right now, but it looks really cute (if I say so myself). My brother likes it too, and mentioned it unbidden not five minutes after meeting me at the airport. That's more than enough approval for me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Korean Heather: A Random Sunday
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008/05/random-sunday.html
Thursday, May 22, 2008. Last Sunday morning I woke up super late (after 9! And lay in bed thinking about the formula to find the ratio of the diameters of two concentric circles such that one is exactly twice the area of the other. Not a hard formula.most of my time was spent doing out the square root of 2 to several decimal places in my head. Eventually I resorted to paper. What are you doing now? Uh" (I decided not to try to explain.) "Er, nothing much. Why? Wear sports clothes.". I picked my team colo...

Korean Heather: February 2008
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 15, 2008. Yes, I had a fabulous birthday. February 11th is just one of my favorite days. What can I say? This past Monday was yet another of many happy returns. Three cakes: one for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner. Meals and fun times with friends and students. Big party at Baskin Robbins for my 31st birthday (get it? And all kinds of birthday messages and well-wishing from loved ones far and near. So anyway, it was fabulous. Thanks for asking. Love, Heather. A traditional ...

Korean Heather: Song of thanks
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008/05/song-of-thanks.html
Tuesday, May 27, 2008. The musicians did a fine set of songs which made up for in enthusiasm anything it lacked in finesse. They were really quite good. When the bride emerged from the house, she climbed into a wooden box called a kama and was carried by three or four men by long poles threaded through it somehow (to prevent her escape? A beautiful buffet including lots of vegetables. Note to myself: crash more weddings! While we ate, I was introduced to a Canadian woman who has been in Korea for only 3 ...

Korean Heather: A Totally Rad Encounter
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008/05/totally-rad-encounter.html
Wednesday, May 14, 2008. A Totally Rad Encounter. So I was on my way home from class and I heard the familiar sound of the gengari,. The high clanging gong of the four-instrument percussion combo known as samulnori. I followed the sound up the concrete staircase of the student union building to see who was playing, thinking maybe some of my music friends were behind this. Sure enough, it was my friend Dong-U, who we call ssabu. I was so high I didn't even mind explaining the joke three times. The climate...

Korean Heather: October 2007
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 18, 2007. Oh, to be happily shod. I have finicky feet. It's enough of a chore finding shoes for me in a country where clogs are in fashion and large sizes readily available for women. Shoe shopping in Korea reduces me to tears. Today I had an utterly unsuccessful attempt to find shoes that:. Were not men's styles. Would not leave me limping at the end of the day. Cost less than $120 for a mediocre shoe that satisfied conditions 1, 2 and 3. Tuesday, October 16, 2007. With me so far?

Korean Heather: Hail May, full of grace.
http://koreanheather.blogspot.com/2008/05/hail-may-full-of-grace.html
Friday, May 23, 2008. Hail May, full of grace. I was greeted with great care and attention and seated at a place of honor, I think, at one end of the newspaper oval. One student who was confident in his English came over to sit next to me, and slowly others got bold and introduced themselves. I also got to hear a few more beautiful Korean folk songs and some awesome drumming from the best group members. I am 31 by standard reckoning. My Korean age is 32 because I was one year old when I was born and ...
