This is a system for evaluating habitat quality for black-tailed deer and moose on the basis of available food, its nutritional quality, and the nutritional requirements of the adult female segment of the population. We focus on food because it clearly sets the potential upper limit on the number of animals a habitat can support. Forage resources (vegetation and nutritional quality) can be measured in the field and can be manipulated by land management. This is not a simulation model. Given specific valu...

Carrying capacity

http://intheworks.uaa.alaska.edu/deer/carrying_capacity.html

We define carrying capacity as the number of animal days per unit area that a given habitat can support, based on the quantity and quality of its food resources. We do not account for dynamic herbivore-plant interactions (e.g., overgrazing, proper-use, feed-back loops, subsequent effects on plant growth, etc.). We base our calculations on the total supply of plant biomass ( current annual growth. To the animal species in question. One animal day is one animal for one day. Notice that our definition of ca...

Carrying capacity

http://intheworks.uaa.alaska.edu/deer/available_biomass.html

Available biomass is the plant biomass that is available to the herbivore (deer or moose) at the time of the analysis. In summer, it is the total standing crop of current year s growth of a given species of plant. In winter, the available biomass for a given species can be greatly reduced from its summer value by seasonal loss of above-ground tissue (deciduous species) and by burial by snow. Moose are known to walk down tall shrubs to reach high portions.

Carrying capacity

http://intheworks.uaa.alaska.edu/deer/metabolic_requirements.html

Our model runs on user-specified requirements for metabolizable energy and protein. It also requires a user-specified daily rate of dry-matter intake of food (oven-dry weight of total food intake in a day). These values are empirically determined. We have provided a recommended set of metabolic requirements. Based on the scientific literature, which the user can use for reference. However, the user can choose different values, however they wish. Summer metabolic requirements for adult females depend on t...

4

Carrying capacity

http://intheworks.uaa.alaska.edu/deer/current_annual_growth.html

Current annual growth is the plant tissue produced in the current year, exclusive of radial growth of older stems in shrubs and below-ground growth of all plants. For herbaceous plants, it is the total above-ground biomass. For shrubs and trees, it is the current year s twigs and leaves. However, the user can choose to include whatever they wish to include as food. Notice that we analyze shrub twigs separately from shrub leaves.
