IlliGAL Blogging: January 2005

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Genetic Algorithms. Monday, January 31, 2005. Assembling a computational cluster for GEC runs. A year and half ago, we built a 90-node diskless PC cluster, similar to (and inspired by) the Beawolf cluster. Lab for running all our GEC experiments. We mostly use the cluster to run multiple GA runs to collect statistics, and also for testing the effect of different parameters on the scalability of the algorithms (For example, see Martin's blog. Which costs about $25). The m...

Progression of Qualitatively More Substantial Results Produced by Genetic Programming. Genetic programming has delivered a progression of qualitatively more substantial results in synchrony with five approximately order-of-magnitude increases in the expenditure of computer time. Numerous questions naturally arise in connection with any proposed approach to machine intelligence. Is the method formulated with sufficient precision to enable it to be implemented (or is it vagueware)? Or is it soloware)?

Example of a Run of Genetic Programming. Symbolic Regression of a Quadratic Polynomial). This page describes an illustrative run of genetic programming in which the goal is to automatically create a computer program whose output is equal to the values of the quadratic polynomial x. 1 in the range from 1 to 1. That is, the goal is to automatically create a computer program that matches certain numerical data. This process is sometimes called system identification. The preceding statement of the problem is...

What We Mean by Machine Intelligence. We use the term machine intelligence to refer to the broad vision articulated in Alan Turing’s 1948 paper entitled Intelligent Machinery and his 1950 paper entitled Computing Machinery and Intelligence. In the 1950s, the terms machine intelligence, artificial intelligence, and machine learning all referred to the goal. Of getting machines to exhibit behavior, which if done by humans, would be assumed to involve the use of intelligence (to quote Arthur Samuel, 1983).
