The Pastor's Blog. Usually about the mission and ministries of First Presbyterian, Edwardsville. Freedom From, Freedom For. For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery . For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. Galatians 5:1, 13. Freedom is both a wondrous and troubling concept, and always has been. For you were called ...

Like Ian Frazier, the apostle Paul experienced frustration about the poor behavior of his spiritual children. They were the Corinthian Christians. In our text from the 11. Wait for your sisters and brothers to show up! Mmmm I sure do love green peas. By the end of the trip, three things happened. First, I earned about three dollars. Third, I learned a...

The Pastor's Blog. Usually about the mission and ministries of First Presbyterian, Edwardsville. Photodisc, gettyimages.com. The text I’ve just read for you from the fifth chapter of Mark contains a story of healing within another story of healing. I think my sermonic focus was drawn to revisit texts about Jesus’ healing ministry because I spent portions of three days this week visiting and praying for members of our church family at Anderson and Barnes Hospital. Earl had been a handsome young man. I...

Religious persecution of Christians is rampant worldwide, says a columnist for USA Today. [1]. More than ever before, violence against Christians seems like a possibility, an expression of religious persecution stemming from a Fundamentalist mindset. The Holy Spirit gives Philip courage to move beyond familiar boundaries. The New School...

The Pastor's Blog. Usually about the mission and ministries of First Presbyterian, Edwardsville. Grace for the Wounded. Sometimes, it seems like there are hurting people everywhere we look. This week, I prayed with Bob B. just before his death, and visited with his family following his death. In spare moments, I noticed and paid attention to several news stories of wounded people and places. The request for a king displeased Samuel, says the text, and I believe he feels displeasure on two levels. Both Sa...

A series of reflections from Woodlawn Chapel Presbyterian Church. Add your comments, thoughts, and prayers as we live of faith day by day. Thursday, January 13, 2011. More Dreams, Less Nightmares. I am convinced that it may take a dream to help us heal from our nightmare. Some are arguing for more guns, not less, suggesting there would have been fewer victims had there been more guns last Saturday. Others desire less jarring political rhetoric. More humility, less vitriol. Bill's 'Faith Matters' Weblog.

Though my book pile is ever growing, two titles are particularly capturing my attention this Lenten season. One is new, the other classic; both are giving me new hope for the church. A series of reflections from Woodlawn Chapel Presbyterian Church. Add your comments, thoughts, and prayers as we live of faith day by day. Friday, December 31, 2010. Were the tragedies just too much? Have we really become that shallow? It got me thinking about my own yearnings as a pastor and, for this year, moderator of the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy. For what do we yearn? I’m not going to speak for others, but here are some of my thoughts. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Songs and Hymns for Pro...

I saw two things take flight this weekend. The other sighting was equally amazing, and no less charming. May God go with you into this week! Monday, September 20, 2010. Fact, Fantasy and the Day After. Here’s a question I never thought I’d ask: how many of you spent part of today updating your fantasy football team stats? Are church fans (s...

Going Beyond the "I-Know-I-Am-but-what-are-you? Now I know that the ads seldom get that personal, but you get the point. Josh's chemistry blog that people read and stuff. Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Nuclear fusion (you know, like, in the sun) has the potential to be a safe and clean source of practically unlimited energy. To generate power by fusion, the nuclei of two light hydrogen isotopes are fused together, releasing energy. To do this, the isotopes must be heated to 100 million degrees celcius and held in a small space for at least 1 second. I visited these blogs. Ryan, Eric, Mica, Chrissy. Sunday, February 3, 2008.
