Black Dog: Welcome, dear reader.
http://theblackeyeddog.blogspot.com/2008/08/in-which-i-am-pretensious-or-something.html
Thursday, August 7, 2008. Welcome, dear reader. In a recent discussion about blogging with a friend, I wondered if the only difference between a blog. Was pretentiousness. My friend readily agreed that's pretty much the only difference between the two forms of internet. Journal networking. We didn't discuss that blogs generally look a lot cleaner, have a more easy to use interface and happily attract a slightly more mature reader. Well, that's the idea, anyway. Fear not, brave reader! I've got a plan.

Torn Cashmere: November 2011
http://torncashmere.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 8, 2011. On the Pleasures of Bathing. This morning, I took a bath. I consider this notable not because I am habitually dirty, but because most Americans don't bathe for cleanliness, they shower instead. I once had a friend refer to bathing as "stewing in your own juices.". Five minutes ago. If you can't stand to bathe, how can you stand to be in your own skin? Besides, while showers are lovely, a bath is simply perfect. For most of us, it's as close as we will ever get to returning ...

Torn Cashmere: July 2012

Monday, July 30, 2012. Artist's Way: Week Two. I've now finished my second week of following the Artist's Way, and I won't lie- it's getting a little tough. When I can tap the right vein, three pages in the morning comes out easily. But when I can't find that voice of honesty and self-examination.well, it comes hard. I also had the pleasure to read this excellent post. By Maria Popova on Tchaikovsky (about whom I have written before. Stay tuned for more on my "creative recovery"! Friday, July 27, 2012.

Torn Cashmere: January 2012

Monday, January 30, 2012. Meatless Monday; or, Watch Out, Cucumber! I found myself feeling decidedly in the mood for something lighter over the weekend, and while some turkey lettuce wraps were good for an evening, it made me suspect that I needed an overall change in my nutrition. Not a dramatic change—I'll still be eating lumps of homemade pecan fudge—but a nudge in the right direction. What I decided on was Meatless Monday. Finding a basic brine recipe isn't hard, but here's mine:. 189; c. water.

Torn Cashmere: December 2011
http://torncashmere.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 31, 2011. One of my favorite design blogs), there was a suggestion recently. That rather than taking this time to wistfully plan what we'll do better and sigh over another year gone, we take this time to celebrate our accomplishments. I like this idea a lot, because it reminds me that small things are worth noting and applauding. I may not have finished my dissertation, written a novel, or gotten a dream job in the last year, but it wasn't barren of accomplishment either. That's where ...

Torn Cashmere: October 2011
http://torncashmere.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 11, 2011. I had a marvelous visit to Houston this last weekend- full of brunches and really good cocktails and dear, dear friends. But in the airport, I found myself thinking less about my destinations and more about the appearance of the travelers around me. I believe there are two pitfalls to be avoided when traveling: the schlubby look and the "business trip" look. Both are equally awful, though if I had to pick one, I'd probably pick the former. Shoes that are easy to get off and on!

Torn Cashmere: The Princess Syndrome
http://torncashmere.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-princess-syndrome.html
Friday, August 17, 2012. These days, if you read an article about little girls, it's often bemoaning their enslavement to Disney Princesses. They only want to dress in pink and pretend to be a princess, mothers bewail. This is not progressive or even aesthetically desirable. But personally, I find the princess backlash confusing because seriously, who the fuck didn't. Want to be a princess? For those unfamiliar with the 1905 Francis Hodgson Burnett book A Little Princess. Type of woman, in our shitty soc...

Torn Cashmere: Artist's Way: Weeks Three and Four
http://torncashmere.blogspot.com/2012/08/artists-way-weeks-three-and-four.html
Sunday, August 12, 2012. Artist's Way: Weeks Three and Four. I didn't want anyone who might be reading this to imagine I had drifted away from this commitment to a "creative recovery" so early on. Last week was just a little quiet, with no drama apart from running out of empty notebook and having to buy an emergency composition book at the grocery store. But it does seem to be a good sort of roto-rooter for the brain. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 8 Words the Royal Family Never Uses. Few people of ...
